A lot of the older homes we work on were built with 1x roof decking. That was standard practice back in the day, but now it is not to building code. A redeck is a good option to add OSB to the top of the slat decking to bring it up to code and make your new roof last a lot longer. It is not that much more expensive and is the right way to do it!
