Cardboard or plastic?

If you store anything in the basement, attic, or garage, plastic bins with tight lids are the better choice. Mice can chew through cardboard, and the paper inside makes good nesting material.

Getting boxes up off the floor on shelves helps too. It makes it easier to spot droppings and harder for rodents to hide.

Your porch light might be feeding the spiders.

Bright white lights draw insects at night, and spiders set up webs nearby to catch them. Switching to warm-toned or yellow bulbs can cut down the insects around your doors, and fewer insects usually means fewer spiders.

It is one of the easiest pest fixes around the house.

Pulling fall and holiday decorations out of storage this week?

Check the boxes before you bring them upstairs. Droppings, shredded paper, and chewed corners are signs that mice have been there. If you find any, wear gloves and clean the area before you put anything back.

Turn off the lights in your entryway tonight and look at the bottom of the front door.

If you can see daylight, insects and mice can find that gap too. A new door sweep is an easy fix that can also help with drafts this winter.

Check the garage entry and basement doors while you are at it.

Found mouse droppings? Do not sweep or vacuum them.

The CDC recommends putting on gloves, spraying the droppings with a disinfectant or bleach solution, letting it soak, and then wiping them up with a paper towel. Sweeping or vacuuming can stir up dust.

Then find out how the mice got in. That part we can help with.

Three spots on your house worth checking this week:

The dryer vent. Make sure the flap closes all the way. The spots where pipes, cables, and the AC line go through the wall. The bottom of your exterior doors. If you can see daylight, the door sweep needs replacing.

These are some of the most common ways insects and mice get in.

Stink bugs and lady beetles gather on the sunny side of the house and look for any crack they can fit into. Check around window frames, siding joints, and vents on that side of your home.

Where do you keep the dog food?

An open bag of pet food or bird seed in the garage is an easy meal for mice. Move it into a sealed plastic or metal bin with a tight lid, and sweep up any spilled seed.

Take away the food source and your garage becomes a lot less interesting to rodents.
