We replaced this homeowner’s aging wood fence with a Trex composite board-on-board privacy fence with cap-and-trim detailing to create a cleaner, more modern, and longer lasting backdrop around this pool and eliminating the ongoing maintenance that comes with traditional wood.

To bring the entire fence line together, we repaired the existing rock columns and added new matching columns, giving the finished project a much more intentional and cohesive look.

The result is more privacy, less maintenance, and a polished finish that completely elevates this yard. We’ll post up a little behind the scenes of this build soon.

One of the things we love about fence design is that your fence doesn’t necessarily have to look exactly like your neighbor’s, even though you share a property line.

Sometimes the challenge is figuring out how to transition between different heights, materials, and styles in a way that looks intentional from every side.

A little reminder that both sides of a fence don’t have to look the same.

For this project, we built a vertical privacy fence on one side and a vertical shadowbox design on the other.

One neighbor already had a shadowbox fence along their side, and wanted their fence to feel cohesive. The goal was still full privacy from both sides.

It’s one of the things we love about what we do. Figuring out those little puzzles. Sometimes the best solution isn’t picking one style or another—it’s figuring out how to make the fence work for everyone.

Maybe you’ve wondered what the difference is between types of steel. Or how you build a fence that’s level when the yard underneath it definitely isn’t. Or if it’s possible to get the look you want when no one seems to stock what you’re looking for in store.

Our goal isn’t to turn over cheap fences as fast as possible. (Even the standard styles we build are to the kind of caliber we’d want in our own yard.) For us, we’d rather slow down and build something we can feel proud of, and that’s actually going to fit your property and lifestyle.

How should the posts be set?
What’s going to keep that gate from sagging?
And how do we make the whole thing last as long as possible?

We love us a good ol’ board-and-batten. 👌🏻

This vertical board-and-batten fence was built with Western Red Cedar to create some much-needed privacy from the busy Austin, TX streets surrounding the property — turning the space inside into a quiet little retreat in the middle of it all.

And that’s one of the reasons we love board-and-batten: true privacy. The overlapping pickets help eliminate those gaps you can get as wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in weather.

Beautiful from both sides, built for privacy, and hard to beat in Western Red Cedar.

This is a horizontal board-on-board fence, built with Western Red Cedar (of course) and black powder-coated steel posts.

With board-on-board, the cedar overlaps instead of meeting edge-to-edge. Besides giving you true privacy as the wood naturally expands and contracts, it creates a really nice finished look on both sides of the fence.

And the black powder-coated steel posts gives us a solid structure built to hold up to our Central Texas weather and soil conditions.

We see automated gates pretty regularly that are missing important safety features, and most homeowners have no idea.

There’s a lot more to a properly installed automated gate than getting it to open and close. In this video, we walk through a few things we look for, including:

• Entrapment protection like photo eyes and sensing edges
• Proper gaps around the gate
• Fall-over protection
• Gate catches and guides
• Covers around rollers and wheels

These features help reduce the risk of someone—or a pet—getting caught, crushed, or injured by a moving gate.

As a Certified Gate Automation Technician through the American Fence Association, Jefferson follows established automated gate safety standards, including UL 325 and ASTM F2200.

Another beautiful horizontal, Western Red Cedar privacy fence completed in Georgetown, TX.

This large yard called for a clean, modern horizontal design that delivered privacy, durability, and pool safety. Our team installed gates with self-closing, self-latching hardware and carefully built the gate framing to meet Georgetown’s pool barrier requirements. We also incorporated a pressure-treated rot board along the bottom of the fence in areas where their dogs would have free reign to protect the cedar pickets from ground contact and help extend the life of the fence.

The result is a timeless cedar fence that complements the home’s limestone exterior while providing secure access to the pool area for years to come.
