THINGS TO DO

Plants are growing and blooming. Keep them vigorous by fertilizing them and watering them as often as needed

Don't forget to remove the spent blooms from your Zinnias. This not only keeps them looking good, but promotes more blooming.

Wait to fertilize the seedlings until they have 3 or more leaves.

Maintain 3 inches of mulch under the branch spread of the young trees and shrubs. Don't replace the existing mulch but add to it. The mulch contacting the soil will decompose over time and that releases nutrients to the roots and will help support better health.

Water the lawn once a week at least until it gets really hot. Then water it twice a week. Anymore and you will slow the growth, activate fungus and waste water.

Have fun!

SOIL TESTS TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON

Performing a soil test on your property is critical in making decisions that will provide the maximum care and benefits for the the grass, plants, and trees.

Effective soil testing is a great start to a good year of growth and color.

The test should show more than just how much nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is in the soil.
The test should show soil pH, which is the measure of the soil's acidity or alkalinity.
Another indicator is the Cation-exchange capacity. Simply put, this is the capacity that supplies nutrient cations to the soil.
Finally, there is Base saturation, which is the percentage of positively charge cations that the soil holds. A balanced soil should have 3-8% potassium, 12-20% magnesium and 65-80% calcium.
An ideal Ca (calcium) to Mg (magnesium) ratio id 75:15 .

Amend/Add To Fertilizer

To increase nutrient release, color, vigor, and root growth, add Beneficial Microbes and Micronutrients to your fertilizer program.
This would be for both the lawn and the garden plants.

Beneficial Microbes increase the efficiency of fertilizer by releasing plant (grass) nutrients that are tied up in the soil, and also helps with nutrient intake into the3 roots.

Micronutrients supply Iron, Zinc, sulfur and other essentials to stimulate color, vigor, and to promote root growth.

The Beneficial Microbes are put out in March and should last 12 months.

Put out the Micronutrients in April, June, and September.

Epson Salt is not just for sprained ankles anymore.
Epson Salt = magnesium sulfate is an important component of chlorophyll and it increases nutrient absorption, as well as facilitates lush green growth.

Weather Patterns

One of the cycles which is used to predict the weather is the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. It is driven by the sea surface temperature changes in the Pacific Ocean.

Three ENSO profiles exist : El Nino, La Nina, and Neutral. El Nino happens when the sea surface temperature is warmer than average. La Nina is exactly the opposite by happening when the sea surface temperature is cooler than normal. Neutral conditions happen when sea surface temperatures are closer to average

Sea surface temperatures influence atmosphere circulation patterns, and this is what causes us to receive no rain (draught) or a pattern of a lot of rain. El Nino lasts about 9-12 months and La Nina will last 1-3 years.

The La Nina pattern that we have been in has lasted for 3 years. But, the odds are favoring a change from La Nina sometime this spring. El Nino looks to emerge later this year.

SOIL HORIZONS

A soil horizon is a layer parallel to the soil surface with physical, chemical, and biological characteristics that differ from each layer.

These layers are: Organic Layer (humus)
Topsoil (minerals with humus)
Eluviation Layer (leached minerals & organic matter)
Subsoil (deposited minerals & metal salts)
Parent Rock (partly weathered rock)
Bedrock (unweathered parent rock)
This is where you get into proper drainage, tillable soil, space for roots and all the engineering aspects of the soil.

It is very IMPORTANT that you water the lawn and your gardens. I know it is January, but we are still dry due to lack of rainfall and that hard freeze we had at Christmas did a knock out on everything. Water the lawn every 12 days for about 45 minutes and the plants every 8 days for about 15 minutes. This will help save you from having to replace everything.

Things That Can Be Done Now

Prepare your spring gardens. Work up the soil and ad 1-1.5 in. of compost to help increase the organic matter and provide some slow-release fertilizer.

Now is the time to prune and plant trees, shrubs and all woody vines. When planting, dig your holes no deeper than the length of the roots. This helps the plant to not settle at a deeper than desired. Fill the soil in around the roots, watering as you go. Be sure to use the exact same soil that you dur out .

Do not prune(trim) trees and shrubs that only bloom in the spring. Do this after they have bloomed.

Keep the leaves picked up off the lawn,
Build a compost pile with all the leaves and other yard trash. Doing this now, will give you some nice compost next January.

RAKE, THEN RAKE AGAIN

Rake and pickup all the fallen leaves from the turf in order to prevent shading, which will prevent the Photosynthesis reactions from happening, even in the late fall and winter.

In the photosynthesis reaction, the turf absorbs energy from the sun. This also works well with nitrogen which is good for growth.

Even the areas that are shaded during the year benefit from the sun when the leaves are gone. This is where they get their energy for the year.

Keeping the leaves on the ground will result in a weaker and thinner turfgrass.

MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU ALL !

Changing Climate

There will be cycles of relentless drought and extreme flooding in our future weather

Atmospheric greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) , methane (CH4) , and nitrous oxide (N2O) are the primary culprits of climate change according to The USDA. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration"s Global Monitoring Lab reported that global average atmospheric carbon dioxide levels at a record high of 414.72 parts per million in 2021, which was up about 100 ppm from1963. Nitrous oxide is a smaller contributor than carbon dioxide, but it is 300 times more potent.

ASSESSING SOIL FOR TREEPLANTING LOCATIONS

About half of all trees exist below ground. This is the foundation for the tree. It is where the roots are and the fertile soil, and what anchors the tree to the ground.
A good foundation is important to the tree just like it is to a building. It is a lot harder and expensive to fix the problem than to do it right at the beginning.

Soil Assessment
Every potential tree site should be evaluated separately, because soils are greatly variable. For instance, the plants in the back do better than the front.
First take a soil sample. Use a shove land dig down 6-8 inches. Take 10 to 12 samples in the area in which you want to plant.

Physical Soil Properties
One of the things to check in your soil samples is soil texture. Texture is based on the size of the soil particles, and tells you the soil's ability to hold water and nutrients. This is where you find out if it is sandy soil or clay.
What is a good soil texture? It is best to match trees to their preferred soil texture.

Soil Structure
Soil structure is how the soil particles are arranged. Different structures affect the soil's ability to hold water and nutrients. Granular structure increases pore space which allows higher levels of water and nutrient availability. Blocky soils have a decreased ability to good tree health.

Pe*******on
This mainly is how compacted is the soil? Pe*******on of less than 6 inches tells us that this soil is heavily compacted. This will limit the roots

Chemical Properties
Soil pH is the measurement of the concentration of hydrogen-ions in the soil. This is key because this affects chemical and biological reactions. The most important of which is nutrient availability The best pH level is 6.0 to 7.0 . In the city where you have construction , concrete, and topsoil that is often removed during building, the soils are often more alkaline. Sulfur is used to lower pH and Lime can raise the pH level. This process of raising or lowering takes at least3 times a year during the growing season.

It is entirely possible that you may need to dig out the existing soil and bring in a more workable soil. Know that pH is always going to be a problem and need to be addressed. The same goes for our lawns.

CARBON RICH SOIL

A carbon rich soil reduces the need of fertilizer and w**d control. It is the soil we used to have back before we started tilling, digging, and adding fertilizer and other amendments.

Farmers are building carbon back into their fields by not plowing and planting cover crops between the time of their regular crops. The key is to always have plants growing.

We want to build carbon in our landscape soil, but this is a little different.
We get some advantage in our turf, as we have plants (grass) always growing and we don't plow the the grass. However, a good turf program works well and makes up for our carbon deficiency.

The garden areas with plants is a good place to work on carbon.
Don't do any Digging
Spray the w**ds
Plant cool-season plants in Winter
Mulch the beds year round
