Salt softener vs. salt-free conditioner — they're not the same thing. 🧂

Salt softeners remove the hard minerals from your water. Salt-free systems don't remove anything — they just keep the minerals from sticking to your pipes and fixtures.

One removes, one prevents scale. Know the difference before you buy.

Wrapped it three times and it still drips? You're probably wrapping the tape backwards.

Here's the rule: hold the fitting so the threads face you, then wrap the tape CLOCKWISE — the same direction the fitting turns as it tightens. Three to five wraps, pulled snug.

That way tightening the fitting pulls the tape tighter instead of unraveling it.

Stop signs, though: this is for small threaded water connections only — threaded shower heads and pipe fittings. Not gas lines, not anything under real pressure. And if the fitting's cracked or cross-threaded, tape won't save it — call someone.

Running out of hot water? You might not need a new heater.

A mixing valve lets your tank store water hotter and mix it down to a safe temp at the tap — up to fifty percent more hot water from the same tank. And some manufacturers even make a booster unit that bolts right onto your tank.

Your filter and your softener are doing two different jobs. 🚰

Filtration handles chlorine, taste and odor, sediment, and contaminants — that's its whole job list. Softening handles hardness minerals. Different jobs, and most homes need to think about both separately.

You've got three common setups: whole-home (filters all the water entering the house), under-sink (dedicated drinking and cooking water at one tap), or a fridge filter (freshens ice and dispenser water). Which one fits depends on your house and your water — tell us what bugs you about yours, and we'll match the setup to it.

Hot water swinging from scalding to lukewarm, for no reason at all?

A water heater with a shorted heating element doesn't always die quietly. This one was overheating in bursts — scalding one shower, lukewarm the next — while the bottom element cooked its own wiring and overloaded the thermostats.

We caught it during a routine flush-and-inspect. Twenty-four hours later (second photo), it was a brand-new Rheem with an expansion tank on top.

That's what the annual inspection is actually for — not just the flush. The quiet problems are the expensive ones.

Ever opened the dishwasher to standing dirty water? Sometimes the fix is already under your sink.

A drain hose runs from your dishwasher to your garbage disposal or sink drain. If that hose sags low under the sink, dirty sink water can drain back INTO the dishwasher. Not great.

The fix is called a high loop: the hose gets fastened up high under the counter, then loops down to the drain. Gravity does the rest — water can't climb uphill.

Next time you're under the kitchen sink in Austin or Marble Falls, take a peek. See a hose sagging like a hammock? That's your culprit.

Does yours loop up high? See a hose sagging like a hammock? That's a five-minute fix — (512) 233-6590.

Your garbage disposal isn't a trash can. Here are the things that kill them fastest:

• Grease and oil — they harden in your pipes and turn into a clog you can't plunge out.
• Fibrous stuff — celery stalks, onion skins, corn husks. They wrap the blades like hair in a vacuum cleaner.
• Coffee grounds and eggshells — they settle into a sludgy paste. Despite what folks say, eggshells do NOT sharpen the blades.
• Starchy foods — pasta, rice, potato peels. They swell with water and jam the works.

What CAN go in: small food scraps with cold water running, a little at a time. When in doubt, the trash can wins every argument.

What's the weirdest thing YOUR disposal has eaten? (We've pulled out spoons. Multiple spoons.) Killed yours? (512) 233-6590.

Your water heater might not need a whole-home water system to beat hard water. 💧

Here's the idea most homeowners never hear about: a compact salt-free conditioner can go on just the hot water line. It stops scale from sticking inside your tank and hot-side fixtures — no salt, no brine, barely any upkeep — just the part of the job your heater actually needs.

In a panic, the fastest valves aren't the big ones — they're the little ones at each fixture.

Under every sink there's a pair of small valves on the water lines, hot and cold. Behind every toilet there's one. A quarter turn and that fixture is dry, without shutting down the whole house.

Toilet overflowing? Reach behind it, turn the valve clockwise, done. Under-sink leak? Same move.

Go find yours sometime soon — twist each one gently now and then so they don't freeze up over time. If one won't budge, don't force it.
