Join us for the virtual Building Equity event hosted by AIA Chicago LGBTQI+ Alliance and AIA Austin LGBTQIA+ Alliance on Wednesday March 10th, 5:30-7:30PM CST. The event will feature a panel of esteemed speakers discussing design equity and the LGBTQIA+ community. We will also celebrate with a happy hour that features an interactive performance by Drag Queen Mini Pearl Necklace.

An equitable design profession is one where all people—regardless of their gender, race, sexuality, or disability—have the same access to opportunities and growth. How can we build equity into our profession and cities? What are the challenges we must overcome to create environments where everyone is encouraged to bring their full and authentic selves? During the panel we will hear from leaders who are advancing equitable spaces in their cities and equitable cultures in their professions, including how they’ve navigated through barriers and their visions for successful strategies.

This Keynote of distinguished panelists will help us stay at the forefront of dismantling discrimination and advancing design justice and equity in the architectural profession. A journey back to Beau Frail’s, Activate’s Principal Architect, final studio project at UT Austin School of Architecture. This [centro de salud] was an exploration for a healthcare center in Quito, Ecuador’s Quitumbe neighborhood.

The region’s high childhood malnutrition and lack of access to hospitals informed the health center’s focus on community gardening and healthy eating education. The site sits along a creek and blurs the edges between nature, garden, and building. Generous hallway spaces and community meeting rooms embrace social engagement between health professionals and the community. Murals throughout the center encourage healthy eating and living.

We're always proud to share about the work we've supported through AIA DesignVoice at Community First Village, which provides housing and community for the chronically homeless in Austin.
