Here are four key aspects that distinguish the townhome design:

The Linear Exterior
Townhouse profiles are distinguished by narrow, deep, lofty massing that typically spans two to four floors. Crisp façades are topped with flat rooflines, sloped mansard patterns, or ornamental brick cornices, and they feature evenly arranged vertical double-hung windows. From above, the mortared clay tile roofs and rich stone patterns provide captivating external elements that cleverly capture the dappled Texas light.

The home's exterior character is based on natural and regional elements. Lush courtyards wrap and anchor visitors to the landscape, while loosely structured symmetries and occasional modest arches retain a relaxed elegance.

Here are four key aspects that define Ranch architecture:

The Exterior
Ranch homes are easily distinguished by their single-story footprint, low-pitched gabled or hipped roofs, and deep, overhanging eaves. Embracing the freedom of a larger lot, these structures frequently use L-shaped or U-shaped plans that wrap around a private rear courtyard, with integrated front-facing garages and huge window groupings that optically blur the line between indoors and outside.

The Outdoor Living Space
The Ranch design marks a structural change away from neighborhood-facing porches and toward private, rear-facing outdoor living. The front entryway is typically reduced to a long, narrow, recessed corridor protected by the main roof's deep eave overhang. Designed to resist harsh Atlantic winters, this building trades grand scale for a low, symmetrical form that is immediately comfortable, grounded, and profoundly entrenched in American culture.

Here are four key aspects that define the Cape Cod design:

The Balanced Exterior
A Cape Cod home's silhouette is a finely composed one-and-a-half-story rectangular box. It is distinguished by a steeply pitched gable roof with tight, flush eaves designed to deflect strong winds, a large central chimney, and a wonderfully symmetrical front evenly flanked by multi-pane, shuttered windows and lovely roofline dormers.

The Minimal Entry Stoop
The Cape Cod style rejects the formal front porch, staying true to its utilitarian maritime roots. A Bio-Based Community Garden

Jan Kattein Architects, headquartered in London, has created a bio-based community garden and educational campus in King's Cross, reimagining public construction using a fully participatory framework. The project, which serves as the permanent headquarters for educational organization Global Generation, avoided standard contractor methods in favor of a two-year community build program led by an on-site technical team and over 3,000 local volunteers.

Rather than merging operations into a single monolithic volume, the design divides the program amongst three discrete, compact structures—a school, an office, and a communal kitchen—that connect to a central socializing courtyard and an edible forest garden.
