Why use rigid board insulation in a building envelope?
Rigid insulation is often used where continuity matters. Instead of fitting between framing, it can be installed as a continuous layer, which changes how a wall or roof performs over time.
Here are four things to understand:
Moisture Resistance Varies by Type
XPS has a more closed-cell structure and resists water absorption more effectively. EPS can absorb some moisture but also dries more readily. The right choice depends on where and how it is used.
Continuous Thermal Layer
When installed outside the structure, rigid board reduces thermal bridging caused by studs and framing. This creates a more consistent thermal barrier across the entire surface.
Reliable R-Value Performance
Both EPS and XPS provide stable thermal resistance, though their long-term performance differs slightly. Understanding those differences helps ensure the assembly performs as expected over time.
Can Support Air Sealing
When seams are properly sealed, rigid insulation can contribute to air control within the wall system. It is not a complete solution on its own, but it can play an important role in a layered approach.
