Before plans are drawn, a home begins with understanding.

Over the next several Thursdays, we will be sharing a closer look at how we approach the earliest stages of design at J Christopher Architecture. This part of the process is often unseen, but it shapes everything that follows.

We will talk about how we learn from our clients, how we study a site, and how those two stories come together to inform the architecture. It is not a single step, but a series of decisions that build on one another with care.

A well-designed home does not begin with a style. It begins with questions, context, and a clear sense of purpose.

At J Christopher Architecture, our process is built on listening, observation, and respect for the land. I hope this series offers some insight into how those ideas take form.

NASA modifies its plan to create a permanent lunar base.

NASA has announced its decision to scrap plans for an orbiting space station in favor of accelerating, instead, development of a permanent lunar facility, marking a dramatic shift to promote American leadership in space. NASA will reallocate $20 billion over the next seven years to implement the "Ignition" plan, which aims to send people back to the lunar surface by early 2028, according to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. What is a hybrid insulation system?

In many homes, no single material solves every need. A hybrid system combines different insulation types to take advantage of how each one performs.

A common approach in Texas is to pair a thin layer of closed-cell spray foam with a less expensive option in the remainder of the wall cavity to create a more balanced wall system.

Here are three reasons this approach is often used:

Balanced Performance and Cost
Closed-cell spray foam is effective for air sealing and thermal control, but using it throughout an entire wall can increase costs. A hybrid approach uses foam where it matters most, then completes the cavity with a more economical material.

Combines Air Sealing and Sound Control
Spray foam helps control air movement, while a fiberglass batt or mineral wood insulation contributes to sound absorption. Together, they address different aspects of comfort within the same wall.

Allows for Future Access
Unlike full-spray-foam systems, hybrid walls can still allow easier access to wiring and plumbing. This can simplify future changes or repairs without extensive demolition.

Designed to support the rhythm of daily life, the mudroom offers a well-placed “drop zone” and a comfortable spot to pause when coming and going. A built-in bench provides a natural spot to sit and remove shoes, while deep lower drawers keep everyday items organized and out of view. Why use rigid board insulation in a building envelope?

Rigid insulation is often used where continuity matters. Instead of fitting between framing, it can be installed as a continuous layer, which changes how a wall or roof performs over time.

Here are four things to understand:

Moisture Resistance Varies by Type
XPS has a more closed-cell structure and resists water absorption more effectively. EPS can absorb some moisture but also dries more readily. The right choice depends on where and how it is used.

Continuous Thermal Layer
When installed outside the structure, rigid board reduces thermal bridging caused by studs and framing. This creates a more consistent thermal barrier across the entire surface.

Reliable R-Value Performance
Both EPS and XPS provide stable thermal resistance, though their long-term performance differs slightly. Understanding those differences helps ensure the assembly performs as expected over time.

Can Support Air Sealing
When seams are properly sealed, rigid insulation can contribute to air control within the wall system. It is not a complete solution on its own, but it can play an important role in a layered approach.
