Honored to receive an 2026 Design Award of Merit last night for our Maraca Benches! Thank you to the and for making this project a reality!!

The “Maraca Benches” are a small project, with big community impact. Positioned in the heart of the
multicultural east side of Austin, our proposal for fourteen benches at the new Longhorn Dam Bridge taps into ideas rooted in the diversity of people and places that surround us. The benches are fabricated to be a smooth, sculpted wooden seat, made of East Texas cypress, nestled into a steel base that offers different eye-catching and saturated pops of color to engage visitors as they traverse the bridge. The rich and often complex history of the local neighborhood prompted us to create a design that pays tribute and celebrate the primarily Hispanic and African American cultures found in East Austin. The benches should feel right at home alongside many of the iconic murals and public art that can already be found dotting the city’s east side.
