When a home has this much glass, the windows need to do more than look good.

The windows feature a laminated layer for added security and acoustic performance, while the triple-pane construction significantly improves insulation—especially important in a home with so many windows.

It’s a great example of how thoughtful design goes beyond aesthetics. Every detail has a job to do, from the way a window looks to how it performs in the home.

Build to live alongside the environment — not against it.

Natural light was one of the biggest priorities behind this home — but bringing in more glass meant thinking carefully about how the home would interact with the Texas sun.

In this conversation, Forge Craft Architecture + Design CEO Scott Ginder and Adam Cormany - Realtor REALTOR® at Realty Austin Compass, talk about how the home’s windows, orientation, and deep porch were intentionally designed to bring in beautiful ambient light while minimizing direct solar gain.

With larger windows facing north and the west-facing porch extending out to help block the afternoon sun, the home stays naturally bright without being overwhelmed by heat and glare.

The result is exactly what the homeowners wanted: amazing natural light that creates a peaceful atmosphere, without turning the house into a glass box.

Our team was honored to attend the unveiling of the Integral Care and Raasin in the Sun mural at Seabrook Square II East Austin (Seabrook Square Apartments). The artwork honors the life and legacy of Roger Taylor Sr., founder and president of the J.J. Seabrook Neighborhood Association, whose advocacy for families, veterans, and East Austin neighborhoods left a lasting impact on the community.

Raasin McIntosh, Founder and CEO of Raasin in the Sun -- the organization that developed the mural -- joined the celebration. Roger Taylor Jr. and Rosalyn Dillard shared a touching tribute to their father. Zell Miller III, Austin's First Poet Laureate, performed a special reading, with the audience joining in to spell out C-O-M-M-U-N-I-T-Y.

The mural reflects the hope, resilience, and belonging that supportive housing makes possible. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Some materials carry a story.

In this conversation, Forge Craft CEO Scott Ginder and Adam Cormany - Realtor, talk about one of the most distinctive elements of Adam’s home: the floors.

The original floors are over 100 years old, with much of the home’s flooring dating back to before the Civil War. Sourced from historic homes across Texas — and even a church —t hese longleaf and heartleaf pine boards were brought together and whitewashed to create something entirely unique.

Some boards stretch nearly 26 feet across the house. Others carry scratches, separation, and decades of patina.

And that’s exactly what makes them beautiful.

Rather than trying to make every detail perfect, the design embraces the imperfections, history, and character of the materials. The floor tells a story — and now, it gets to keep telling it.

Before you build, you need to know what the site will allow.

A feasibility study examines the conditions that shape a property—from zoning and topography to trees, parking, utilities, and access—to determine what can realistically be built.

Zilker Studios is a great example. The ½-acre site had a 10-foot grade change and two large heritage live oaks, making market-rate housing unviable. But by considering affordable 425 SF efficiency units, the building could be configured around the trees. Nearby transit and low car ownership also allowed for less parking.

The result? The feasibility study identified 110 units and 23 parking spaces, and ultimately, the completed project delivered 110 units and 22 spaces.

That’s the value of a feasibility study: understanding a site’s constraints and opportunities before moving into design.

Our team recently joined the open house at Seabrook Square in Austin, a project designed by Forge Craft that brings permanent supportive housing to the community.

Scott Ginder, CEO of Forge Craft, was there to celebrate the project and see the space come to life alongside the people it was designed to serve.

Developed in partnership with Capital A Housing and Integral Care, Seabrook Square will provide 60 studio apartments alongside common spaces, supportive services, and staff offices. Throughout the design process, our team worked closely with Integral Care leadership and residents of another Integral Care property to understand their lived experiences and incorporate the principles of Trauma-Informed Design.

Affordable and supportive housing plays an essential role in building healthier, more inclusive communities. Thoughtful design can help ensure that these spaces are accessible, welcoming, and responsive to the people who call them home.

We’re proud to see Seabrook Square taking shape and grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life.

Adam shares how he initially found himself drawn toward the classic look he was seeing everywhere. But with Scott and the Forge Craft team pushing him to think differently, they threw conventions out the window. Together, they designed a home that reflected the Cormany family's unique taste and lifestyle.

The result was a home with more personality, practicality, and authentic beauty. As Scott puts it, we always encourage our clients to build the house they want to live in — not the house they think a future owner might want.

A house isn't finished when it LOOKS good. It's finished when it FEELS like the people who live there.

That belief started close to home. In 2016, Austin Home Magazine featured the house Scott designed for our own family, and one line from that piece has stuck with us for a decade: "Some homes I've been in are great, beautiful, modern homes, yet they lack the sense of home; there's no heart to the home."

Even the window in these photos carries that idea. It's a jalousie window that was once a part of my grandparent's 1950's San Antonio home. My grandma would work in the kitchen, and the little window served as her connection to activity in the living room. My uncle gifted me the window when we designed our house. Now, instead of playing bank drive-thru, as I did when I was a kid, I use the window in much the same way as my grandma Lucille. I have my "mom control center," a window by which I see the present but am reminded of precious times spent with my grandma and grandpa.

Form, function, and heart. Forge Craft values all three in ALL of our projects. "Designing to Make Life Better for People"...it's not just a tagline. My little window serves as proof of our commitment.
