Great tips from people who preserve old houses in Norway. All of these are applicable here in the US. I highly encourage anyone interested in renovating their old house to read this list, ask the questions, find your people, and take inspiration from international examples - they are really inspiring and have a lot of experience with very old houses. ❤️

Took a break from posting for a while since the world has been heavy and it didn’t feel like the right time. Today, I’m feeling compelled to post a picture of this watercolor I did today. It’s a study of this “weed” that I found in my garden, that has little dark blue/purple-black berries. I’ve never seen it before and certainly didn’t plant it (I’m currently in the “how in the world does gardening work” phase). I decided to do a little digging (researching) and found it’s likely part of the Nightshade collection, but one that is not poisonous. I’m early in my plant identification studies, so after a few google links showing me very similar plants, I decided it could be Solanum Americanum. I’m inspired by the studies that Hilma af Klint, Swedish painter, did from 1919-1920. Her series “Nature Studies” fascinated me - I got to see it at in NYC a month ago. The guidebook for the exhibition spoke of Hilma’s interest in the connections between the plant world and the world of the soul. Recently, I heard that the plants you need in your life (for healing, etc) show up in your garden. So it’s got me thinking a lot about what the world is telling us through nature. That’s all. ❤️ More architecture coming soon.

On June 6th, I was lucky enough to partake in the opening of the brand new exhibition "Unknown Landscapes" at the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Ottestad near Hamar, Norway. I am so proud of the work my dear friends and museum staff did for this exhibition, and grateful that I could assist with a portion of it as well. Here are a few photos of the opening celebration.

Hours/Days at the Norwegian Emigrant Museum
Open June 7th to August 17th, Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm.
You may call or email to make an appointment in the off-season :).

This is a series I call “Pork chops in the wild.”

On a recent project, I found myself researching boxed eaves and the design options we have for resolving where the eaves meets the gable rake (aka, the corner juncture at the gable end of a roof). In conditions where there is no “eave return,” this can result in a so-called “pork chop”(named for the shape it creates). So while in Norway, I did a little field study of various “pork chops.” Here’s a few 😊.

Returning to the Hallingdal Museum in Nesbyen, Norway. This is a “landhandel” or general store. I just love the paint colors on the windows and doors. The building is interesting because it’s a very traditional three-room Akershus typology house, which would have been a common house in the early 1900’s but it was adapted to be used as a general store. This could have been due to its relatively small size. By the beginning of the twentieth century, many people built two-story houses and reused older houses for other uses.

Building details in Vestre Slidre, Valdres Valley, Norway. Subtle shapes in the gable-end rafters, wood drip caps instead of metal flashing, and foundation support created by logs resting on carved stone. You can even find some buildings with their original window glass, which you can tell by the wavy texture and the tint of the glass itself. ❤️
