That giant wasp in your yard might be less scary than you think ๐Ÿ‘€

Meet the cicada killer, one of the largest wasps you'll find in Illinois and, understandably, one that gets a LOT of attention.

Despite the intimidating name and size, cicada killers are solitary wasps that generally aren't aggressive toward people. In fact, those territorial males you may see buzzing around can't sting at all.

Females dig individual burrows in the ground and hunt cicadas to provide food for their young.

That doesn't mean you should handle one; a female can sting if threatened, but seeing cicada killers doesn't automatically mean you have a dangerous wasp infestation.

Sometimes identifying exactly what you're looking at is the most important first step to responsible pest management. If you're unsure what's buzzing around your property, our team of pest control experts is here to help!

This month's Pest News hits close to home ๐ŸฆŸ

The Illinois Department of Public Health recently announced the state's first confirmed human case of West Nile virus for 2026. At the time of the announcement, August 26th, West Nile activity had been detected in 50 Illinois counties.

It's an important reminder that even as summer starts winding down, mosquito season isn't necessarily over.

Our takeaway:

Continue taking simple precautions into the fall: eliminate standing water around your property, keep screens in good repair, and use an appropriate mosquito repellent when spending time outdoors.

And if mosquito activity is making it difficult to enjoy your outdoor spaces, Chem-Wise also offers mosquito fogging treatments designed to help reduce mosquito populations around your property.

We're sharing the latest information from IDPH below for anyone who wants to learn more ๐Ÿ‘‡

Summer's winding down. Pest season isn't ๐Ÿ‘€

There's something about August that always seems to fly by. One day you're enjoying backyard barbecues, and the next, kids are heading back to school, and the first hints of fall are in the air.

As the seasons begin to change, so does pest activity. Late summer is when many pests start preparing for cooler weather:

๐Ÿ‚ Stink bugs begin searching for sheltered places to spend the winter.

๐Ÿญ Mice start looking for warm places to nest.

๐Ÿ Yellow jackets become more active around outdoor food and gathering spaces.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Spiders often become more noticeable as they follow their food sources and seek shelter.

Our takeaway ๐Ÿ‘‡

The best time to prepare for fall pests is before they settle in.

That's why fall is an important part of Chem-Wise's Tri-Annual Pest Protection Plan. Our seasonal treatments are timed to help reduce overwintering pests before they become a bigger problem, so you can spend less time dealing with unwanted guests later in the season.

If you haven't started a preventative pest management plan yet, late summer is one of the best times to do it.

The school year is starting! Is your pest management plan ready for the season ahead? โœ๏ธ

As students and staff return to classrooms across Northern Illinois, schools become busier than ever (and so do many pests).

With increased foot traffic, food service areas, athletic facilities, and aging buildings, schools can face a variety of pest pressures throughout late summer and fall. As temperatures begin to cool, rodents start looking for shelter, while stinging insects around playgrounds, entrances, and athletic fields can quickly become a safety concern.

๐Ÿ’š Our takeaway

The best school pest management plans focus on prevention, not just reaction.

Regular inspections, identifying potential entry points, monitoring pest activity, and addressing issues early can help reduce disruptions throughout the school year.

Chem-Wise partners with schools, daycares, and educational facilities through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs that are tailored to each building, scheduled to minimize disruption, and supported with the documentation facilities teams need.

Myth or Fact? "If I keep a clean house, I won't get pests." ๐Ÿค”

The answer? Myth...with a little truth mixed in.

Keeping your home clean is an important part of pest prevention, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

Many common pests aren't attracted to dirt or clutter at all. In fact,

๐Ÿœ Carpenter ants are looking for moisture-damaged wood.

๐Ÿญ Mice are searching for warmth and can squeeze through surprisingly small openings.

๐ŸฆŸ Mosquitoes and ticks live outdoors and don't care how tidy your kitchen is.

๐Ÿชต Termites are interested in the wood that makes up your home, not what's on your countertops.

On the other hand, good sanitation can help discourage pests like cockroaches and pantry pests by reducing easy food sources.

๐Ÿ’š Our takeaway

A clean home is a great start, but the best pest prevention also includes sealing entry points, reducing excess moisture, eliminating standing water, and addressing problems before they grow.

That's why every effective pest management plan looks at more than what's happening inside your home.

If stink bugs seem to appear out of nowhere every fall, the real story starts now.

As summer begins to wind down, many overwintering pests start looking for a warm, protected place to spend the colder months. Brown marmorated stink bugs are among the most common, but they're not the only ones. Boxelder bugs, Asian lady beetles, and cluster flies also begin searching for tiny openings that lead indoors.

These pests aren't trying to damage your home; they're simply looking for a safe place to survive the winter. Unfortunately, once they're inside wall voids, attics, or other hidden spaces, there's very little that can be done until they begin emerging on warm fall, winter, or spring days.

๐Ÿ’š Our takeaway

The best time to think about fall pests isn't after they've found their way inside, it's before they do.

Late summer is a great time to inspect your home's exterior for gaps around windows, doors, vents, siding, and utility openings. Pairing those preventative steps with a professional exterior treatment can help reduce the number of overwintering pests that make your home their winter hideaway.

A little prevention in August can save a lot of frustration later ๐Ÿ™Œ

Treating pests is only part of the job. Finding out why they're there is where the real work begins ๐Ÿ”

Every pest problem has a cause...

Sometimes it's excess moisture attracting ants. Other times, it's a gap around a door, overgrown landscaping touching the house, or a small opening that's giving pests an easy way inside.

That's why Chem-Wise takes an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Rather than focusing only on the pests you can see, our technicians inspect your property, identify the conditions contributing to the problem, and recommend solutions that help reduce future pest activity.

The goal isn't simply to eliminate today's pests, it's to help prevent tomorrow's.

By identifying the source of the problem and combining targeted treatments with practical recommendations, we help homeowners and businesses achieve longer-lasting results and greater peace of mind.

Have you ever been surprised by what was actually causing a pest problem around your home?

It all started with a few large black ants ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿœ

A local homeowner noticed a few unusually large black ants inside their home over the course of several weeks, climbing up walls and over carpets. As many of us would, they were simply squished and forgotten.

Then, after returning home from vacation, they found this ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

A small hole in the sliding door frame. A pile of coarse, sawdust-like material beneath it. The ants had been busy while they were away.

Our takeaway ๐Ÿ‘‡

One of the earliest signs of a carpenter ant problem can be repeated sightings of large black ants indoors, especially if you notice them in the same area of your home. Another clue is small piles of coarse wood shavings, called frass, which carpenter ants push out of the galleries they excavate to build their nests.

Carpenter ants don't eat wood as termites do, but they can still cause damage over time if a colony is left untreated.

If you've been seeing large black ants around your home, don't assume they're just the occasional visitor. An inspection can help determine whether they're simply foraging or whether they're a sign of a larger issue that needs attention.

Have you ever discovered something around your home that seemed small at first but turned out to be something more?

One last playground check before the school year gets busy ๐Ÿ‚โœ๏ธ

As summer winds down, many families are soaking up every last afternoon outside. Before the kids head for the swing set or sandbox, it's worth taking a quick walk around your play area.

Late summer is a busy time for many pests, and play structures can provide the perfect place to hide.

Here's what to keep an eye out for:

๐Ÿ Paper wasp nests tucked beneath slides, platforms, or swing frames

๐Ÿ Yellow jacket activity around the ground near sandbox edges or nearby landscaping

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Spider webs collecting in enclosed play equipment

๐Ÿœ Carpenter ants around wooden playset posts or landscape timbers

๐ŸฆŸ Standing water in sandbox lids, toys, buckets, or other containers where mosquitoes can breed

Our takeaway ๐Ÿ‘‡

A quick five-minute inspection before the kids start playing can help you spot potential issues early. If you notice something that doesn't look quite right, or you're unsure of what you're seeing, our team at Chem-Wise is always happy to help identify the problem and recommend the best solution.
