In the 1860s, the Golden Road was the original wagon and stagecoach route connecting the fledgling settlement of Denver to Golden City, which served as the first capital of the Colorado Territory. The main trunk of this historic route was later renamed Colfax Avenue—now known as the longest business street in America—while a specific cut-off leading directly into downtown Golden kept the designation of South Golden Road.
The Three Historic Golden Roads
Early travelers followed three distinct branches or pathways from the Denver area to reach the mountain gateways of Golden:
North Golden Road 10th Street West 44th Avenue
Middle Golden Road 13th Street West 32nd Avenue
South Golden Road South Golden Road West Colfax Avenue

Evolution and Paving Milestones
• 1859–1860s Origin: Formed as a vital supply line and transportation hub for miners and wagons heading into the Rocky Mountains from Denver.
• 1916–1918 Paving: The county portion of South Golden Road was paved all the way from Youngfield Street into Ford Street, temporarily earning local fame as "the paved road" or the "Golden Paved Road" due to the scarcity of paved surfaces at the time.
• 1922 Expansion: Infrastructure grew to accommodate early automobile traffic, highlighted by the construction of service stations like the Oasis Service Station at 24th and East Street.
• 1960 Realignment: The Jackson Street project shifted portions of the roadway connection to better integrate with Ford Street.
Modern Character of South Golden Road
As detailed by the Visit Golden Blog, South Golden Road has evolved from a rural wagon path into a vibrant neighborhood. While modern commercial plazas, supermarkets, and suburban development now line the corridor, it maintains a nostalgic, eclectic "Route 66" vibe featuring vintage signage, historic local businesses, and colorful roadside murals.

Creators Note: I think it's pretty obvious but I can't be absolutely positive I'm in the exact same spot as the early photo but if you look to the right side in the middle of the picture you'll see three rock formations that jet out from South Tabletop Mountain and those match up pretty well also if you look at the rest of the horizon you'll see that it's very similar as well. So I'm pretty confident that I'm somewhere in the ballpark of where the original photographer was.

"On This Day" April 7, 1827
Benjamin Franklin Wadsworth

Today we remember Benjamin Franklin Wadsworth, born April 7, 1827 — an early settler whose influence helped shape the community that would become Arvada.
In 1870, the U.S. Post Office asked Wadsworth to name the growing settlement to distinguish it from other communities along Ralston Creek. His wife, Mary Ann Wadsworth, chose the name “Arvada,” honoring her brother-in-law, Hiram Arvada Haskin — giving our city the name we know today.

Wadsworth was among the early settlers in the area, contributing to Arvada’s agricultural roots and community development. His name lives on today in familiar landmarks like Wadsworth Boulevard, a lasting reminder of his impact on the region.
A respected member of the early agricultural community, Wadsworth’s legacy lives on not only in name, but in the roots of Arvada itself.

He passed away on April 12, 1893, but his story remains part of our shared history.
