Should you fertilize your fall garden? 🌱 The short answer: yes—but don’t overdo it!

Before planting, work compost or a balanced fertilizer into the soil to replenish nutrients used by your summer garden. Once your fall crops are growing, their needs will depend on what you planted. Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale appreciate extra nitrogen, while root crops like carrots and radishes need less—too much nitrogen can give you lots of leafy growth and smaller roots.

A little nutrition goes a long way toward a healthy fall harvest! 🥕🥬

How deep should you plant fall seeds? 🌱

A good rule of thumb is to plant seeds about two times as deep as the seed is wide, but your seed packet is always the best guide. Tiny seeds like lettuce often need only a light covering, while larger seeds can usually go a little deeper.

In late summer, the biggest challenge is keeping the seedbed evenly moist while the soil is still warm. Water gently, avoid letting the surface dry out, and consider light shade if the sun is especially intense.

Check your first frost date, count backward from your days to maturity, and get those fall favorites started.
