Join us on July 29 for a two-part tour. We'll meet at 10:30 a.m. At the Maine Wood Treaters sawmill, aka MEWood Timber & Posts (formerly Tukey's Lumber), 460 Smithfield Road, in North Belgrade, for a tour. The facility saws red pine logs into landscape ties, fence posts, and other products that are then treated at the company's Mechanics Falls location. We'll meet the Mill Manager, Alan McGuire, and Hal Bumby, the owner of the MEWood Family of Companies.

Then, after lunch, we will take a walk through the MWO Land Trust's Hammond Forest property in Rome, on Watson Pond Road, to see an area slated for harvest later this fall or winter. This will be a “before-the-cut” tour; Mike Kinney, a forester for Prentiss & Carlisle who works on MWO Land Trust woodlands, will explain the silvicultural and logistical decisions that go into planning a successful timber harvest.

Lunch is BYO. Weather depending, we can gather at the old woodyard at the woodlot to eat before taking the walk.

RSVP appreciated for either the morning or afternoon sessions, or both. Please let us know if you will be joining us for lunch!

FMI and if any questions, contact Andy Shultz, Maine Tree Farm Program Kennebec County Chair & MWO Two Rivers Chapter leader, at 207 242-8845, or [email protected]
