American Cockroaches in Georgia
If you’ve spotted a BIG roach around your home lately, you’re not alone!
American cockroaches are one of the large cockroach species commonly found throughout Georgia. Adults can reach around 2 inches long and are typically reddish-brown to chestnut in color, with a lighter-colored border behind the head.
Why are we seeing them in summer?
Georgia’s warm, humid summers provide plenty of the moisture and warmth cockroaches need to thrive. American cockroaches prefer dark, damp environments and are commonly associated with areas like sewers, basements, crawlspaces, drains, and other protected spaces.
They’re also primarily nocturnal, so you’re much more likely to catch one wandering around after dark.
Why do they come inside your home?
American cockroaches can occasionally make their way indoors while searching for moisture, food, or shelter. Cracks around doors and windows, gaps around pipes and utility lines, and other small openings can give them an easy way inside.
Seeing an occasional American cockroach doesn’t necessarily mean you have an indoor infestation, but frequent sightings are worth paying attention to!
A few ways to make your home less inviting:
• Seal cracks and gaps around the exterior
• Repair leaks and reduce excess moisture
• Keep food and trash properly sealed
• Reduce clutter and potential hiding places
• Keep an eye on damp areas around the home
Fun fact: Despite their name, American cockroaches aren’t actually native to America! They’ve simply become very well established throughout the United States, including here in Georgia.
