Trees are able to this because they can provide more foliage, shade, and natural beauty per square foot of real estate than any other plant or landscape can do. In a city like Atlanta land is a valuable commodity and should never be wasted. When compared to landscaped areas, trees are more magnificent, offer shade, require less maintenance, and are permanent fixtures that become part of the fabric of our city. Landscaped areas are small, decorative, expensive to maintain, and being decorations do not become part of a city but merely adorn it. (This is not true of all landscaped areas, but it is usually true of landscaped portions of the streetscape)

Not every tree that shows a structural concern needs to come down. Cabling and bracing is one of the more underused tools in urban tree care — and for the right tree, it is a meaningful way to extend a mature tree's life while managing the risk it might otherwise pose to your property.

The purpose of dynamic cabling is to limit how far a co-dominant stem or a heavy lateral limb can move under load — wind, ice, or the weight of a wet canopy after a spring storm. It does not lock the tree in place; it reduces the range of movement at the point most likely to fail. Done correctly by an ISA-certified arborist, it buys a well-loved tree years of continued safe growth while you are not left wondering whether it will hold in the next storm.

Bracing rods take a different approach, providing rigid support for cracked or split unions that might otherwise be a removal sentence.
