Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth…(Psalms 97:12-13 NIV).
I was taught as a young child that dogwoods bloom during Easter to commemorate the resurrection. Folklore indicates that our Savior’s cross was erected from a dogwood tree. Consequently, these trees no longer grow large and wide but instead develop thin trunks and winding limbs to ensure that they can never be used again for that purpose.
After the crucifixion, their blooms appeared as white crosses. The tips of each petal are marred, denoting the nails that pierced Jesus. The center of each bloom resembles a “crown” depicting the thorns placed atop His head. The white color of the blooms reminds us of the innocence of Christ, sacrificed on our behalf.
God’s glory continually manifests in nature, but it’s up to us to recognize it. May we remain mindful of God’s grace, mercy, and faithfulness as we celebrate Holy Week.
Incomprehensible agony. Darkness all over the earth.
Still, it was a Good Friday.
For the joy set before Him, Jesus Christ endured.
And we can too.
