Project Reveal: A Custom Modern Mountain Haven
https://www.reynard.design/rivendell-hiawassee-ga

We are thrilled to reveal our recently completed project, 'Rivendell,' in Hiawassee, GA! This home is the perfect example of modern mountain living, balancing sophisticated design with a deep respect for its surroundings.

Collaborating with the Couch family, we created a nature-integrated, artisan-inspired 3-bed, 2.5-bath sanctuary on a sloped 1.03-acre wooded lot.

Key Design Features:
⛰️ Working with Topography: Rather than flattening the lot, our architecture adapts to its slope, preserving the natural terrain.
💡 Artisan Touches: The design showcases unique stained-glass elements, including a custom window panel built into the living wall and intricate fireplace screens.
🌿 Color Drenching: We used a soothing sage green to 'drench' the custom bunk room (walls, ceiling, and built-ins), creating a tranquil retreat.
🛠️ Intentional Materiality: A mix of stacked stone, horizontal and vertical siding, and warm wood details ground the design.

We invite you to tour the full gallery and learn about our structured five-phase architectural journey: [REYNARD.DESIGN/RIVENDELL-HIAWASSEE-GA] Link in bio.

Give Your Home a Name That Aligns with Your Vision
A recent client conversation gave me some insight in how we approach early conversations about design. We realized that coming up with a creative name for a home isn't just a fun exercise, it really does inform design.

Before talking too deeply about rooflines and materials, try giving your home a working title. Here are some common architectural styles/terms to help you flesh out that vision. There are certainly far more terms than this but the word list below is just a starting point.

Traditional: A focus on classic proportions and symmetry. Think along the lines of timeless Colonial or grounded Craftsman designs.

Contemporary: “Contemporary” isn’t a specific style but rather refers to what is current. It features innovative materials, expansive glass, and fluid, open layouts.

Minimalist: Rooted in simplicity. It champions clean lines, highly purposeful spaces, and a reduced, intentional color palette.

Industrial: Celebrates the structural, functional elements of a building. Expect raw materials like exposed brick, poured concrete, and steel.

Transitional: A harmonious, highly livable blend that marries the warmth and comfort of traditional design with the clean profiles of contemporary style.

Mid-Century Modern: Characterized by simple shapes and an emphasis on functionality, “Mid-Century” was popularized during a time when technology was rapidly making homes more comfortable and innovative.

Farmhouse: Many homes feature this style in more rural areas. It brings rustic “down home” charm to the design, and emphasizes natural materials, warmth, and a strong connection to rural landscapes.

The Art of Blending
Equipping you with these terms is not meant to make you feel confined to one category but to give you working definitions you can draw from. The most unique, personalized homes often come from mixing these elements.

If your working title naturally evolves into a "Modern Farmhouse," an "Industrial Craftsman," or a term completely your own, embrace it and define what those terms mean specifically for you.

Blending styles is exactly how a blueprint becomes a home that feels yours distinctly

"It’s not designing for, it’s designing with." 🏡✨

In this testimonial, Marci Robinson shares her incredible experience designing her dream home in beautiful Talking Rock, GA, with James Knight and the team at Reynard Architectural Designs.

Marci highlights what makes our process truly special: our collaborative approach. From pulling inspiration from our home tours (thanks, Jack!) to staying connected through our podcasts, newsletters, and TikToks, Marci explains how our team lives and breathes home design every single day. We don't just draft plans; we build excitement, share ideas, and celebrate the beauty and creativity of the entire design journey.

Who doesn't love a classic A-frame? 🌲

We had so much fun designing the Wayah Cove cabin up in Franklin, NC. It’s a 1,200 sq ft, 2-bed, 2-bath home that packs a ton of character into a really smart footprint.

For the exterior, we went with a dark blue-grey siding to help the house blend right into the trees, paired with large custom-angled windows to bring in all that natural light. Inside, we wanted a mix of modern and cozy. You'll find dark green shaker kitchen cabinets, warm butcher block counters, a freestanding wood stove, and a fun black metal spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom! 🍳🪜

This home also has a very personal backstory. It was originally built in 2023 as a quiet, comforting space for a family member during her final days. Today, it serves as a vacation getaway that keeps her memory alive. It’s truly a house built for hope and healing, and it has a wonderful energy to it. 💚

You know exactly how you want your future home to feel, but connecting the space between abstract emotions and a "buildable" form can be a challenge. To help you articulate your vision clearly, I want to share some steps for a framework for cultivating your own design vocabulary:

1. Focus on Emotion and Form Rather than agonizing over materials and technical details, think about the space itself… how do you want to feel when you walk into a room? What is your daily life activity like? Which rooms need to be more “cozy” and which ones need to be more “expansive” and “connected”? If you work out at home, which places need to provide “energy” and where would you need more “vibrance”? Talking about emotion with your architect is a great way to convey your design intent.

2. Translate Imagery into Language. Look at the photos you’ve saved. Instead of just saying, "I like this kitchen," challenge yourself to dissect why it draws you in. Is it the "clean lines" of the cabinetry? The appeal of the exposed beams? The illumination of the lighting? Pinpoint the specific elements doing the heavy lifting.

3. Build a Rich Lexicon. Sit down and compile a list of at least 20 descriptive words that connect with your ideal space. Don't overthink it—just write. Examples could include: Modern, Inviting, Minimalist, Earthy, Playful, Timeless, Moody, or Tailored. When you bring this lexicon to your design team, it transforms the conversation. Instead of guessing, we can immediately begin designing a space with specific emotional and structural value.

Share your 3 to 5 keywords from your own design lexicon in the comments below, and describe how you want your home to feel. I’m looking forward to reading your responses and starting the conversation!
