Buyer Beware: The Truth About Imported Fan Filter Units vs. American-Made
Over the last few years, rebranded imported Fan Filter Units (FFUs) have flooded the market. Many are advertised with “Made in USA” language — but in most cases, that just means assembled here with foreign parts. That’s not the same as being truly manufactured in the United States.
These units are often marketed with a few common hooks:
• Non-standard dimensions pitched as a “larger work area.”
• Lower prices that don’t stay lower once you factor in the details.
• Confusing labels and wording that make it hard to tell where the unit was really made.
How to Spot an Imported Unit
Filter labels
If you see filters marked “H13” or “H14,” that’s a red flag. Those are European efficiency ratings (EN 1822), common on Chinese-made filters. American HEPA standards are different: 99.97% efficiency at 0.3 microns, as set by DOE/ASHRAE/IEST.
The “larger work area” claim
Imports often promote their metric-based dimensions as if a few extra inches automatically mean a better unit. The reality: U.S. FFUs are built in standard 2×2 (23 5/8″ × 23 5/8″) and 2×4 (23 5/8″ × 47 5/8″) sizes. These dimensions line up with American cleanroom ceiling grids, drop ceilings, and regulatory requirements. Sticking to the standard ensures proper fit and consistency across facilities.
Standards and regulations
American-made units are tested to DOE, ASHRAE, and IEST standards. Imports often lean on different rating systems or use “assembled in USA” wording to appear more domestic than they really are.
Why Choosing American-Made Makes Sense
• Tested to the correct U.S. HEPA standards (99.97% @ 0.3 µm).
• Built to fit seamlessly into U.S. cleanroom and ceiling systems.
• Supported with warranties, service, and parts you can actually get.
• Trusted in industries where there’s no margin for error: healthcare, pharma, labs, and manufacturing.
The so-called “cheap” imports aren’t cheap anymore. Their prices are creeping closer to U.S.-made equipment, but without the same reliability or support. In the long run, American-made FFUs deliver better value, stronger performance, and peace of mind.
A History of Trusted American Manufacturers
When I talk about American-made FFUs, I’m talking about companies that have been doing this for decades — some for nearly a century:
• Clean Rooms International – Building cleanroom systems since 1982 (~43 years).
• Envirco – Makers of the first commercial FFU, established in 1966 (~59 years).
• Clean Air Products – Serving cleanroom markets since 1969 (~56 years).
• Terra Universal – In business since the mid-1970s (~50 years).
• Labconco – Supporting science since 1925 (~100 years).
• Air Science – Innovating ductless filtration since the late 1990s (~27 years).
These aren’t temporary importers trying to cash in. They’re established American manufacturers whose products have been trusted in cleanrooms, labs, hospitals, and factories for decades. At Nothing But Air Solutions, I’m proud to stock and deliver these brands directly to my customers.
✅ At the end of the day, every FFU I sell is built to U.S. standards, tested for full filter efficiency, and backed by warranty. Don’t get drawn in by imports with clever labels. If clean air matters, buy American-made.
