In Cobb County, Georgia, police say a dog was found trapped inside a wire crate in the bed of a pickup truck outside a motel off Interstate 20 on July 22, after the truck had reportedly been parked there for more than 10 hours. While temperatures outside were in the 90s, the plastic bottom of the crate measured a staggering 122 degrees, which was hot enough to burn the dogās paws and left the poor animal struggling to stand before eventually lying down to avoid more pain. Officers found the owners, identified as Ebony Newell and Reginald Weems, asleep inside the motel, and both were immediately arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. The dog was rushed to Cobb County Animal Services, examined by a veterinarian, and is now safely being treated. Officials noted that this was just one of about a dozen calls they had received that summer involving dogs left in hot vehicles, emphasizing that a hot vehicle can become dangerous fastācracked windows, a truck bed, or a crate do not make it safe. Because dogs depend completely on humans to protect them from dangers they cannot escape, officials in Georgia urge civilians who witness this to call 911, document the vehicle, notify nearby businesses, and stay close until authorized help arrives. For this fortunate dog, someone did make that crucial phone call, and because of that act of kindness, he is alive, safe, and finally getting the care he deserves.
