Yayoi Kusama changed the way we see what art can be.

We’re deeply saddened to hear of her passing on August 14, 2026, in Tokyo, Japan, and grateful for the influence and inspiration she leaves behind. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama grew up in an affluent but troubled family and began experiencing vivid visual and auditory hallucinations as a child. Those experiences would profoundly shape her artistic vision throughout her life.

Throughout an extraordinary lifetime devoted to artistic creation, Kusama built an internationally acclaimed career as a pioneering avant-garde artist.

We’re inspired by her willingness to take a singular idea and push it so far that it became unmistakably hers, then turn that idea into physical spaces people could actually enter.

Her work was never afraid to be strange, obsessive, repetitive, enormous, or unapologetic. She took the ideas that lived in her mind and kept pushing them into the physical world until a dot became a universe, a pumpkin became an icon, and a room became infinity.

An idea doesn’t have to stay an idea. It can become something you can walk around, touch, climb on, experience, and remember. Kusama spent her life proving just how powerful that can be.

She continued painting until her final days, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work and a reminder to keep making, keep experimenting, and keep pushing an idea further than feels reasonable.

Thank you, Yayoi Kusama, for making the world a stranger, more playful, and infinitely more interesting place.

A 2 X 4 ain’t what it used to be. Shop tip with Conner: Always be measuring! It will save you from becoming unregulated down the road. 🤣
