Athens Village Board to vote tonight on resolution about proposed Coxsackie-Athens schools reorganization plan
Unpopular plan is focus of community dissatisfaction
Athens Town Democratic candidates Pirrone, Dinkelacker and Gardner stand in opposition to plan
A proposed plan by the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District (CACSD) to reorganize district schools with a net effect of shifting the location of certain lower grade levels and busing small children from E.J. Arthur Elementary School in Athens to school buildings in Coxsackie is under fire by many in the community.
The plan already has been the subject of a number of public hearings sponsored by the CACSD, presentations, and newspaper articles. A number of Athens Village Board members have come out in opposition to the plan, and tonight the full Athens Village Board is poised to officially resolve its opposition.
Athens Town Democratic candidates Michael Pirrone, Phyllis Dinkelacker, and Cari Gardner oppose the plan.
Neither the Athens Village Board nor the Athens Town Board have legal or administrative authority over the CACSD, so tonight's Village Board vote will be a statement of community sentiment and is not binding on CACSD.
The Village board meeting tonight (Wednesday, October 27) starts at 6:30 and the proposed resolution in opposition to the Grade Reconfiguration is fourth on the agenda.
The meeting will be held in person at the Athens Firehouse, 39 3rd Street, and the Village Board is also trying a new hybrid remote/in-person method. The public is invited to participate live or via this Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/6278758374, or dial in at: (646) 558-8656 using meeting ID: 627 875 8374.
