Meet Zach Hall, Scroggs Construction’s Project Manager Assistant. Construction comes with plenty of moving parts, and Zach helps keep them moving in the right direction.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the job?
A: I enjoy working through the different challenges that come up during construction, coordinating with subcontractors and the rest of the team, and watching the plans turn into a finished home. It’s especially rewarding to see the quality of the final product and know that I played a part in making it happen.

Off the clock, Zach is settling into two new roles: husband and dad. He loves spending time at home with his wife and their little one, watching their baby grow and experience new things. When he can squeeze it in, he enjoys a round of golf with friends, too.

We’re glad to have Zach on the Scroggs crew!

This 1970s bi-level home in Arden came with a clear to-do list: expand the kitchen, replace a deck past its prime, and create a primary suite with privacy.

The Scroggs team started by opening the wall between the kitchen and living room, creating a more open, connected living space. Downstairs, the new primary suite became a private retreat with its own bathroom, while an adjoining solarium found a new purpose as a home office.

The renovation also came with a few less glamorous but essential fixes. The team rebuilt the entry stairs to meet code, restored structural support where a previous owner had removed a load-bearing wall, repaired water damage behind the old deck, and installed a drainage system to address water intrusion along the front of the house.

The end result is a home that is both beautiful and functional.

Two apartments. Plenty of character worth keeping.

Our team combined two Haywood Street apartments in downtown Asheville, bringing together blue cabinetry, custom stainless steel sliding doors, and original hardwood floors. Matching the details took some detective work, but the result feels right at home.

Q: How do I know if a wall is load-bearing?

A: Before you pick up a sledgehammer, take a closer look. That wall might seem like it’s just separating two rooms, but it could also be helping hold up your house.

There are clues. Its location, the direction of the floor joists, and what sits above it can all tell us something, but none of these factors gives us the full answer on its own. If you want to remove a wall, it’s critical that you have a professional assess it first.

And if it is load-bearing? Your plans aren’t necessarily off the table. At Scroggs, we’ll help you explore what’s possible and find a way to open up your space safely.
