We've been conducting some plot sampling in Transylvania County this week. Keith is pictured here reading a core sample he extracted from a scarlet oak using an increment borer. A tree's core sample tells us many things, two of them being age and how many inches of diameter over a period of years a tree puts on (radial growth). These are just some of the calculations that help us understand how productive a tree is on a specific site in relation to its size.
