A little cabling instruction for when your stems are too close for the length of two proper buries.

Cabling is a great proactive and preventative tool in arboriculture. We utilize dynamic and static cabling to provide supplemental support while still allowing natural movement of the tree. We instal cables to an overall healthy tree that may have a codominant stem or significant leaders or when a defect is present that warrants some extra support. Cabling helps reduce the potential for damage to the tree during high winds and other weather events.

Unfortunately our profession requires us to remove trees. We do not take that responsibility lightly and the decision is always made from a place of structural integrity of the tree and safety concerns. We are always incredibly grateful for the chance to put some trees back in the ground, especially after the devastation we have seen to the tree population in WNC over the last year and a half.

This week we were given the opportunity to crane assist Preservation Arborists with a multi day tree planting job! They do great work in soil focused arbor care. We see significant value in working alongside other tree care companies to maintain, protect and cultivate our trees in the Asheville Area. 🤍🌳

You cannot be an arborist without being adaptive.

You can go into a job with a plan and it quickly has to change due to unforeseen circumstances. Weather, neighbors, equipment issues, aerial inspection of the tree…etc, can all cause a shift in a plan. We adapt, figure it out and get it done.
One of our projects last week was supposed to be a straight forward crane removal. However, when the ground you plan to set up on is too soft from the weather the days leading up to the job, and your crane decides it wants to spend a few days getting fixed, you you just have to figure it out.
Our team did an amazing job manually removing the canopy of this rapidly declining Southern Red Oak in very tight quarters and we were able to bring the crane in the next day to pick the wood. We may have had to shift gears, and make a new plan, but walking away with a job completed and a happy costumer makes it all worth it!

Air spading is an integral part of Plant Health Care.
We use this method to provide many benefits to the health of trees through soil restoration and root care. This non-destructive excavation method moves soil with high-pressure compressed air while being safe for tree roots and underground utilities.

The main applications include:
🔹Root Collar Excavation - This application is one step in the process of treating “girdling roots” (roots wrapping around each other/main stem of the tree, restricting vascular flow) caused by improper planting or over mulching of the tree. It removes excess soil or mulch from the base of the tree to expose the root flare, which improves the oxygen and gas exchange and moisture regulation of the tree.
🔹Radial Trenching - Improves aeration, drainage, and promotes new root growth. This application involves digging trenches in a radial pattern (like a wagon wheel) from the tree trunk outwards to the drip line. These trenches are then backfilled with porous soil amendments providing nutrients to the tree and aiding in healthy root growth.
🔹Air Tilling - A safer way to till soil without the risk of blades potentially cutting roots. The tool loosen the top 6–12 inches of soil. It is used to amend soil or prepare for planting.
🔹Bare Rooting/Transplanting - Safely removes soil from around roots for transplanting trees or to inspect the root system without damage, minimizing transplant shock.
🔹Vertical Mulching - Unlike the continuous trenches of radial trenching, a series of individual vertical holes (usually 2–3 feet deep) are drilled throughout the root zone. These holes are filled with organic matter/ soil amendments. This method is ideal for alleviating deep soil compaction.

One of our favorite lunch spots unfortunately had a recent set back in business with a fire. When they contacted us to help get some new exhaust fans installed on the roof, we were excited about the opportunity to help!

Black Bear BBQ was very generous with their kitchen during the time of Helene, opening its doors to World Central Kitchen to cook and provide meals for people in the community. It was our pleasure to help them in the process of getting back up and running!

With it being International Women’s Day, we couldn’t let the day pass without recognizing our women on staff at Asheville Arborists! Our crew has three women working in the field (she also runs our operations and keeps our crew on point!) and . And holding down the fort and making everything happen in the office! If you ask any one of them, they would say it’s a blessing to work alongside other women in this industry! Our men would say they appreciate a different way of thinking and ex*****on on jobs. We truly believe we are better together!

For all the women killing it in arboriculture, we see you and we are proud of you! 🫶💪 🤍🌳

Took the bucket truck downtown to help restore and preserve the historic Kress building. It was built in 1928 by E.J.T Hoffman and now is home to the wonderful

The building features beautiful Terra Cotta ornamentation. The amazing team at has taken on the restoration project of this building. We had the opportunity to fly them up to measure and scan the Terra Cotta details in order to make new ones to replace the damaged ones. The process of recreating these tiles is a time intensive project and we were happy to have had a small hand in helping it all go a little smoother. We are thankful for a lovely morning getting to take part in preserving the beauty of our city.

Our crew has been up to some unconventional work on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have replaced climbing trees with repelling down hillsides for a few weeks. Clearing the overgrowth since the storm so repairs can be made to the structure and support of the road. Stepping out of the box of the normal day to day work helps us gain new skills and think through different rescue scenarios. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue to help repair WNC and we don’t thank our office and operations staff enough for all the work that goes into logistically making all of our jobs happen!

‼️Check your tourniquets‼️

We recently took inventory of our med kits and some tourniquets did not pass the test. Thankfully these have not been needed to be deployed, but it has allowed a few unreliable ones to fly under the radar. Unfortunately In a world of convenience and fast pace production we must be more diligent in vetting what we purchase. It’s easy to want to find products for a cheaper price point especially if you are purchasing in bulk or personally to have on your saddle. It is always worth the extra cost to make sure it won’t fail in the time of need. We would recommend purchasing CAT tourniquets from a reputable source such as Stop the Bleed or North American Rescue. At the very least make sure what you are currently carrying passes the ridge and welding test pictured above.

If you have any knowledge to add to the topic please drop it below so we can all continue to look out for our fellow tree people. 🌳🫶

Beyond grateful for Keith Stoner’s dedication to Safety Director during his time at Asheville Arborists.
September 27th, 2024, Hurricane Helene hit Asheville, NC. This caused the largest natural disaster North Carolina had ever seen. The wind damage was unprecedented, with the landslides and flood wreckage adding to the already challenging terrain that is Asheville. After the rain stopped, we gathered at our flooded shop to start the massive project ahead of us. Most of the team was without power and water for the first month, some longer. Contractors poured in to help, camping at our dusty yard with no access to basic needs. The company went from a crew of 7 to almost 30 overnight, and kept that pace for months.
Keith Stoner was the Safety Director at Asheville Arborists when the storm hit. At the beginning, Keith challenged the team with a lofty goal - zero safety incidents for the duration of storm response. This is of course our goal every day, but the environment and the rules had changed, making even the most basic tasks inherently more hazardous. The daily drive to the jobsite was inundated with downed transmission lines, closed roads, no traffic signals, washed out bridges, debris everywhere, people unhoused, only to arrive at some seriously complex tree work.
During this time, Keith beat the drum, ensuring we kept the cadence of our safety culture. He remained vigilant, reminding us that our objectives were “Safety, Quality, and Production - in that order.” This was no easy feat when every day our teams were pushing to the max, giving their all to help the people of Asheville. He managed this while climbing and running a crew daily. Keith was always there to remind us that none of what we do matters if we don’t all make it home.
Keith Stoner gave Asheville Arborists, our contractors, and the people of Asheville everything he had to keep us safe. He reminded us daily that we are indeed our brother and our sister’s keepers. We (everyone who worked with us on the storm response) are extremely proud to say that we did it. We emerged from this disaster with zero safety incidents. It was a team effort all around, led steadily by Keith.

Plant Health Care (PHC) 🌱 A large part of our operation that does not get much spotlight. PHC is a holistic management approach to proactively maintain the health of the trees, shrubs and landscaping. This is a way to stop problems before they start and manage already existing ones with the goal of improving the overall vitality of the landscape. Improving soil health through fertilization and utilizing Integrated Pest Management when needed are two major practices we implement often. One of the common treatments we see great success with and is pictured above, is treating hemlocks for woolly adelgid. These invasive little aphid - like insects suck sap from the needles, causing major defoliation and eventually the death of the tree. PHC is a very cost effective way to improve the overall health of your landscaping and ideally avoid costly removals.

Mossy lawn that tears up easily? Don’t let that deter you from getting that hazardous tree removed. We come across this often here in WNC and go above and beyond to preserve your property. This customer was very pleased with our ability to preserve their back lawn while operating our mini skid steer to remove a hazardous dead pine tree along the fence. Utilizing mats and meticulous operating of machinery is how we accomplish this goal.
