Beyond grateful for Keith Stoner’s dedication to Safety Director during his time at Asheville Arborists.
September 27th, 2024, Hurricane Helene hit Asheville, NC. This caused the largest natural disaster North Carolina had ever seen. The wind damage was unprecedented, with the landslides and flood wreckage adding to the already challenging terrain that is Asheville. After the rain stopped, we gathered at our flooded shop to start the massive project ahead of us. Most of the team was without power and water for the first month, some longer. Contractors poured in to help, camping at our dusty yard with no access to basic needs. The company went from a crew of 7 to almost 30 overnight, and kept that pace for months.
Keith Stoner was the Safety Director at Asheville Arborists when the storm hit. At the beginning, Keith challenged the team with a lofty goal - zero safety incidents for the duration of storm response. This is of course our goal every day, but the environment and the rules had changed, making even the most basic tasks inherently more hazardous. The daily drive to the jobsite was inundated with downed transmission lines, closed roads, no traffic signals, washed out bridges, debris everywhere, people unhoused, only to arrive at some seriously complex tree work.
During this time, Keith beat the drum, ensuring we kept the cadence of our safety culture. He remained vigilant, reminding us that our objectives were “Safety, Quality, and Production - in that order.” This was no easy feat when every day our teams were pushing to the max, giving their all to help the people of Asheville. He managed this while climbing and running a crew daily. Keith was always there to remind us that none of what we do matters if we don’t all make it home.
Keith Stoner gave Asheville Arborists, our contractors, and the people of Asheville everything he had to keep us safe. He reminded us daily that we are indeed our brother and our sister’s keepers. We (everyone who worked with us on the storm response) are extremely proud to say that we did it. We emerged from this disaster with zero safety incidents. It was a team effort all around, led steadily by Keith.
