Italy Part 2! We wound our way up from Venice to the Dolomites, with a stop along the way in Fonzaso, where Nick’s grandmother was born. We hiked Cinque Torri, Seceda Ridgeline (from the lower gondola - a challenging hike for our youngest, but well worth it!), and Alpe de Siusi. Peppering the hikes we stopped at amazing rifugios / hüttes to rest, let the kids play, and eat incredible food. We stopped in Bressanone and Castlerotto on the way down to Riva del Garda. From Riva, we took the ferry to Limone sul Garda and Malcesine - towns frozen in time along the beautiful Lake Garda. This trip was the perfect blend of architecture, culture, and natural beauty! Italy Part 1! It’s been a packed summer with travel and family visits, but our biggest excursion this summer was to Northern Italy; the first international travel for our kids, and a sentimental trip back to the country where we studied architecture (24?!) years ago. We started with visits to Sirmione, Verona, Vicenza, and Venice. Highlights include pasta (of course), gelato (of course), cappuccinos, wandering through quiet alleys, watching the World Cup group stage, and absorbing the history and rich culture of Italy. We returned inspired as always; with the details and proportions of these timeless facades already informing our design work.

A modern home in Fairview, NC, this residence will straddle the natural ridge of a steep site, allowing for dynamic outdoor spaces and panoramic views. We love the interplay of tiered outdoor living spaces against the single shed roof form, giving this house a rambling character while maintaining an efficient foundation footprint.

Although we post more polished renderings most of the time, every project involves extensive drawing by hand. The classic “architect’s napkin sketch” is real! This loose work keeps the ideas flowing. We often include even our discarded sketches into our client presentations to show them our process and how we got from point A (their wishlist of function and aesthetics) to B (a custom home design).
 In this slideshow you can see the development of our Reservoir project from sketch to model to render - over the course of several presentations.

Updated renderings of our Sprout Mountain residence! We love the feel of this modern mountain home; balancing natural materials and rusticity with sleek glass windows opening to a panoramic blue ridge view. The collaboration with on the gorgeous interiors was a highlight of this project experience.

Career Fair! We spent a day this week at our children’s elementary school, sharing our profession with hundreds of kids. They loved drafting with a mayline, flipping through my college sketchbook, and panning around one of our 3d digital house models. Here’s hoping we inspired a budding architect or two!

Check out this new residence atop Beaucatcher mountain, overlooking Asheville proper! The design is inspired by craftsman architecture, but with a modern expanse of glass on the view side. A welcoming front porch is supported by large stone piers, blending in with landscape boulders and becoming a part of the land.

This renovation and addition is nearing completion of construction in Asheville’s Lake View Park neighborhood. A new sunroom is centered around a rustic fireplace crafted from the stone salvaged from the existing chimney’s demolition. Interior renovations include a new kitchen and expanded lower level living - complete with a ping pong area and music room!
