Working on reviving a midcentury classic, designed by the Southeast maverick A.G. Odell Jr., we set out to discover the history of the house and architecture first. The findings of which we got to present to our clients with this book..
A huge shout out to our clients and the team members making it happen:
Alex Montgomery (alex montgomery)
Mikale Kalis (Mikale Kalis).
And a big thanks to the former homeowners, white-gloved librarians, and architectural history buffs who handed a helping hand..
A tip of our hats to NCModernist for working hard on preserving that which doesn’t want to be lost!.

Toby‘s Weekend Pic(k)s (THE STRUCTURE EDITION): Gerês House by Carvalho Araújo in Portugal - consider monumentalism or even something akin to brutalism can make an engaging home - in fact, maybe the grandiose confidence of the formal gestures and structure are engaging wonderfully with the hillside, the water features, the natural light and views, and the movement into and through the house - also, what do you know, concrete just might be able to provide an inhabitable surrounding after all - well done!

Toby‘s Weekend Pic(k)s (THE STRUCTURE EDITION): Amami House by Sakai Architects in Japan - just jaw-dropping - off the grid - five independent volumes create semi open and connected spaces that reach into the veranda and garden - it comes with solar power, compositing, and a vegetable garden - what a stunningly beautiful home!

An entire chapter in Toby’s book “Supersizing Bliss” is devoted to our front doors. We park the car in our garage to “enter past the dried-up paint cans, leaking oil canisters, piles of reeking sport paraphernalia, and overflowing recycling bins”! Not so for our clients at the Nussbaum De La Rosa Home.
It’s a procession, guided by these freestanding walls that take you deep into the heart of the home where all the cozy, yet grand living spaces are waiting for you.
We stopped by the other day for a quick scouting visit, getting ready for a photoshoot. It still surprises us with all its intricacies!.

Toby‘s Weekend Pic(k)s (THE TEXTURE EDITION): House in Nemu by KKAA YTAA in Japan - the bareness is intoxicatingly inviting - the calmness freeing - who knew that the presence of your own being could be so simply helped along to a calmer state - no frills and yet so rich - there is a perfect balance between cold concrete blocks and warm wood - openings that unnoticeably change from being filled by windows and thin air - a simple strong structure adorned by the lack of the mundane - these images provide peace without having set a foot into the building
