Denver’s first freeze is approaching! ❄️

If you haven’t winterized your irrigation system yet, now’s the time—especially your above ground backflow. In the meantime, wrap your backflow with a towel, bag, or a cover to prevent any serious damage. When temps drop below 32°F for several hours, any water left inside can freeze, expand, and burst your backflow or irrigation lines.

Why wrapping your backflow matters:

Colorado falls are short but stunning — and the right trees make the most of it. If you’re looking to add fall color to your landscape, here are a few Front Range favorites:
🍁 Autumn Blaze Maple — one of the most reliable performers for brilliant red-orange color, plus fast growth and strong tolerance for our climate swings.

💛 Quaking Aspen — the Colorado classic. Golden-yellow leaves that shimmer in the wind, best suited for higher elevations or well-irrigated spots at lower ones.

🧡 Chokecherry — a smaller native tree with vibrant orange-red fall color and the bonus of spring blooms and berries for wildlife.

❤️ Red Oak — deep red-to-bronze color that holds on longer into fall than many other varieties, plus strong structure for our windy days.

💚 Honeylocust — soft yellow color and a lighter canopy, making it a great choice for yards that want fall color without heavy shade.

The best part? Many of these are also well-suited to Colorado’s soil and water challenges, so you get color without sacrificing durability.

Meet Nikola, one of our incredible Project Managers!

Ten years ago, Nikola joined our team after being invited by the owner to work as a seasonal employee. A decade later, he’s grown into the role of Project Manager — a position he describes as unique, complex, and one he truly loves.

Being a Project Manager takes creativity, attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication — and Nikola brings all of it to every project, helping clients bring their vision for their outdoor space to life.

What he enjoys most? Seeing the excitement on a client’s face when they experience their finished project for the first time. Nikola also loves the people side of the job — meeting new clients and working closely with them from start to finish, turning their ideas into outdoor spaces built for lasting memories. We built this amphitheater-style gathering space for Lincoln Academy, giving students and teachers a place to learn, gather, and connect with the outdoors right on campus.

Fall & Winter Watering 101 🌲💧
If it’s above 40°F and there’s no snow on the ground, your plants still need a drink — not just in summer.

⚠️ Important to note Denver’s new watering restrictions: Grass irrigation must stop by September 30th. Hand watering and drip irrigation is still allowed. If you are in need of an irrigation blowout, call us to get on the schedule.

When to Water:
🚿1-2x a month when temps are above 40°F
Water late morning to midday so it soaks in before any freeze

Trees/Evergreens:
🌲Regular trees (especially new ones): Water deep at the drip line 2-3x a month

🌲Evergreens: Shallow roots mean they dry out fast — extra attention needed, water along the dripline (10–15 gal per inch of trunk diameter)

Shrubs:
🌳5 gallons, twice a month, October–March

🌳Larger shrubs (6ft+) might need up to 18 gallons

Perennials:
🪻Most low-water perennials do well in dry winters

🪻High-water perennials such as, Hostas, Coral Bells, and Lupine may need winter watering

New Plantings:
🌱Trees, perennials, shrubs, and sod planted in the last 1–3 years need more water than established ones

🌱Good rule of thumb: Trees take one year per inch of trunk caliper to establish. For example, a newly planted 2” trunk tree typically requires a minimum of two years to establish its root system

Quick Tips:
💧Skip windy or rainy days
💧Even drought-tolerant plants need water until fully established

Your landscape will thank you come spring 🍂
