🌸 August Gardening Tasks: Deadheading + Weeding for a Strong Fall.

Late summer is prime time to tend your Front Range garden:

Deadheading: Snip spent blooms just above a leaf node to redirect energy back into roots and foliage — often triggering a second flush before our first frost. Salvia, catmint, and yarrow respond especially well right now. Want to feed the birds? Leave some coneflower and black-eyed Susan blooms through fall.

Weeding: Denver’s fall moisture = happy plants AND happy weeds. Pull them after rain (roots come out clean), mulch bare soil right after, and get it done before Labor Day — our dry fall winds love to scatter seed heads.

A little effort now = new growth and a stronger comeback next season. 🍂

This past weekend was our annual corn hole tournament — and Mother Nature had other plans! The rain forced us to get creative, dodging picnic tables (and each other) under the gazebo while playing corn hole and a few other games. Turns out a little rain can make for even more fun! 🌧️🎯

Is your yard actually safe for your dog? 🐾

A lot of Denver homeowners don’t realize that some of the most common landscaping choices can actually be very harmful to pets. We design dog-friendly yards all the time, and we want to share some plants to use and some to avoid.

🌿 Plants to USE:

🌻Sunflowers — hardy, cheerful, and totally dog-safe
🌻Ornamental grasses — great for Colorado’s climate and soft on paws
🌻Snapdragons, roses, and marigolds — all pet-friendly and beautiful
🌻Zinnias – easy, colorful annual
🌻Rocky Mountain Penstemon – native, great for pollinators
🌻Blanket Flower (Gaillardia) – Colorado native, drought-tolerant, long bloomer

🚫 Plants to AVOID:

🚫Tulips — bulbs are the most toxic part, very common in Denver yards
🚫Daffodils — extremely popular in Colorado, toxic especially the bulb
🚫Autumn Crocus — extremely toxic, can cause organ failure
🚫Foxglove — common in gardens but highly dangerous
🚫Lily of the Valley — often used as ground cover but toxic if ingested

There are more toxic plants than these so make sure to double check before planting.

🪵 One more thing — watch your mulch. Coco mulch smells amazing but is toxic to dogs. We always use cedar or shredded hardwood in pet-friendly designs.
