Before: a rough, uneven spot — rocks, ruts, and ground that sloped the wrong way. No good place to set a building or park anything.

After: scraped, leveled, and packed down flat — a pad ready for a portable building to sit solid and level.

Thirty hats. That's all we ever ordered — 15 gray, 15 black — and we gave nearly every one of them away right here in southeast New Mexico.

So imagine our surprise when one of them turned up in Scottsboro, Alabama, at Unclaimed Baggage — the store that resells luggage the airlines lost. Somebody wore that hat onto a plane, the suitcase never made it home, and our scorpion ended up in a bin on the other side of the country.

A man named Adam spotted the leather patch, recognized the logo, tracked down this Page, and sent us the picture. Our answer? Grab it — that hat clearly still has miles left in it.

No ads bought that trip. Just a hat, handed to somebody in New Mexico, doing what good work does — traveling farther than we ever expected.
