This summer, the Town of Cape Charles launched "IDEAS, Cape Charles Railroad & Harbor Ideas Competition", an international design competition to reimagine the currently vacant historic rail yard and harbor site. Open to the public, students, and design professionals, the competition invited innovative design concepts to help shape the town’s master plan for the harbor. The proposals bridged legacy and future, balancing historical context with contemporary thinking to explore how a traditional American town can evolve beyond its railroad past.

Please join us in congratulating our MTFA summer interns, Callie Mikita and Ishmam Chowdhury, as well as the MTFA team, for being competition winners! We also commend our summer interns, Elena Craft and Caroline Griffis, along with the MTFA team, for receiving honorable mentions in the competition.

The exhibition showcasing the competition entries will be open to the public at the Altitude Gallery starting October 3rd at 6:00 p.m. through October 15th.

Meet Bob the Beaver 🦫 CAN we build it, yes, we CAN! 🥫

For this year's AIA Northern Virginia 2026 Canstruction competition, the MTFA team rolled up our sleeves and worked hard to chip away at hunger while building a dam big difference. We’re excited to share that we took home awards for Best Use of Labels AND Best Original Design. Cheers for Bob!

Standing at 9 feet 6 inches tall, Bob was created using 2,220 cans—mostly Bush's Baked Beans — which will be donated to help feed our community through the Capital Area Food Bank.

A quote from the judges: "Bob the Beaver definitely brought some serious b***y to Canstruction—and fortunately, that big b***y also came with a lot of cans and a whole lot of food for the food bank."

MTFA is proud to celebrate the grand opening of Alger Hall at James Madison University. Formerly Spotswood Hall, it's been renamed in honor of former JMU President Jonathan Alger, a fitting tribute to his legacy. Michael Foster represented our team at the ribbon cutting, joined by President Schmidt for this historic milestone. Reborn as a modern living-learning community, Alger Hall is designed to inspire civic engagement, leadership, and meaningful dialogue for generations of Dukes to come.

We're honored to have partnered with JMU on this transformation, and we can't wait to see the impact it has on campus life.

We can't say this is the most glamorous part of historic preservation, but we are proud to have a team that rolls up their sleeves and gets down into the weeds (literally). Andrew Marshall, preservation architect, was on site at the John Howard house in Freedman's State Historical Park in Maryland.

Before the Civil War, Enoch George Howard gained his freedom and went on to help build a new Black community in northern Montgomery County, Maryland, including the stone-and-timber John Howard House (c. 1870) built for his son. Now owned by the state as part of the future Freedman's State Historical Park, the house is being studied by MTFA and our consultant team, assessing its history, condition, and structural issues to guide its next chapter in the new historical park.

We're proud to share that MTFA's project, the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center will be part of the District's exciting DC250 Mural Project, celebrating America's 250th Anniversary!

Led by Mayor Bowser's Administration and the MuralsDC program, this citywide initiative will bring eight new murals, one in each ward, to life, highlighting the stories, culture, and spirit that make Washington, DC so special. We're honored that the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center has been selected as the Ward 8 mural site and look forward to seeing this incredible vision come to life in our community.

Exciting news! MTFA's own Amanda Edwards contributed to a chapter chronicling the preservation, regulatory, and engineering challenges of renovating a National Historic Landmark in "The Folger Shakespeare Library: Renewal and Revitalization," now available for preorder. It's a story MTFA knows firsthand: our team performed a conditions assessment and extensive facade restoration at the Folger, from the steel and stained glass windows down to the hardware.

We were onsite last week for the opening ceremony of the Cannon House Office Building and the excitement is real. This multi-phased total building rehabilitation modernized original architect Carrere & Hastings' federal landmark that's preserved for generations to come. For more than a decade, the careful conservation treatment of every crack, spall, and stain returned this beaux-arts beauty to its intended shine. Congratulations to the Architect of the Capitol, the design team, and the construction team on a successful project. 120 years down. 120 more to go.
