COMMUNITY ALERT — Roofing Scam in Allen, TX: “Rat Infestation” Tactic 🚨

What’s happening:
A roofing company (reportedly going door-to-door in Allen) is offering “free inspections” while claiming there’s a rat/rodent infestation in the attic. After the inspection they aggressively pressure homeowners to pay immediately for “infestation removal” and related roofing work — sometimes demanding cash or an instant signature. This appears to be a scare tactic to push unnecessary services and fast payment.

How the scam works (what to watch for):

Unsolicited door-to-door visits offering a “free” roof/attic inspection.

Dramatic claims: “Your attic is full of rats/poop/smell” or “If we don’t treat now, your house will be condemned.”

High-pressure sales: they insist you must pay now or the problem will get worse right away.

Immediate demand for cash/credit, or a signed contract on the spot.

Little/no documentation, fake photos, or “evidence” that can’t be verified.

Unmarked vehicles, workers without proper ID, or companies that can’t provide insurance or references.

If someone comes to your door — do this instead:

Don’t invite them inside. Ask them to wait on the porch or leave a card.

Ask for ID, company name, business license, and insurance proof. If they refuse, say no.

Get everything in writing. A legitimate company will provide a written report, clear photos, and a detailed estimate — not a hard sell.

Refuse pressure. Don’t pay on the spot. Don’t sign anything under pressure.

Verify independently. Contact the City of Allen code enforcement or animal control and get at least two independent estimates from local, reputable providers.

Avoid cash-only deals. Use traceable payment methods and insist on a written contract with timelines and warranty information.

Contact animal control if you’re actually worried about rodents — they can verify infestations and advise next steps.

How to report suspicious activity or fraud:

Report to the Allen Police Department (non-emergency) if the behavior is intimidating or you’ve been targeted. Use the official City of Allen website to find contact info. If you feel threatened or it’s an emergency, call 911.

File a consumer complaint with the Texas Attorney General — Consumer Protection Division: oag.texas.gov/consumer-protection.

Report to the Better Business Bureau at bbb.org.

Share details with your HOA or neighborhood watch so others can be warned.
