🍄 Surprise Visitors in the Garden! 🍄
Here at Duque's Palms and Nursery, one of the most common questions we get after a good rain is: "Why are there mushrooms popping up in my mulch?! Should I be worried?"
The short answer: Usually, it’s a sign of a healthy, thriving ecosystem! 🌿✨
Here are some fun facts about why fungi are actually garden superheroes:
🌱 The mushrooms you see are actually a vast underground network called mycelium. This web connects plant roots, helping them share water and nutrients. Plants literally "talk" and support each other through fungi!
🍂Fungi break down dead organic matter (like old mulch, leaves, and dead roots) and turn it into rich, usable nutrients that your palms and tropicals absolutely love.
💧Mycelium improves your soil's structure, making it much better at retaining moisture during those hot, dry days.
⚠️ BUT WAIT! A Word of Caution ⚠️
While mushrooms mean your soil is alive and well, many wild mushrooms popping up in lawns are highly toxic to humans and our furry friends. So here's some tips to stay safe 🐶🐱👶
❌If you have dogs, cats, or toddlers who like to explore with their mouths, it is best to pluck the mushrooms and throw them in the trash.
❌Never eat a garden mushroom. Even experts can be fooled by toxic lookalikes.
❌One of the most common poisonous lawn mushrooms (Chlorophyllin molybdites) looks like a harmless white cap but will make you or your pets severely ill.
