🌲 We’re Taking a Short Break for a Great Cause 🌲

Tick’D OFF Pest Control will be closed through Monday, June 15, as I participate in our 3rd Annual Men’s Mental Health Kayak Trip.

Each year, a group of men from across Wisconsin comes together to unplug from daily life, spend time outdoors, and focus on mental health through paddling, camping, fishing, and genuine conversation. What started as a simple kayak trip has grown into a tradition that reminds us all of the importance of friendship, support, and taking time to recharge.

While I’m away, Tamra will still be available to assist customers, answer questions, and schedule services.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our family-owned business. We appreciate each and every one of you.

🛶 We’ll be back in the office Monday and back on our regular service routes Tuesday, June 16.

Until then, stay safe, enjoy the Northwoods, and remember to check for ticks!

I’ve mentioned before that professional pest control sometimes requires rotating products and active ingredients. This year is my rotation year.

Rotating products can help reduce selection pressure on insect populations and allows us to use different modes of action over time rather than relying on the same chemistry year after year.

Our goal has never been complete elimination of every insect on a property. The goal is effective control of target pests while maintaining balance in the environment.

Researchers have observed that some mosquito populations can adapt to repeated exposure to repellents such as DEET, which is one reason pest management professionals continue to monitor products, rotate chemistries when appropriate, and adjust programs as needed.

Pest control isn’t just about spraying, it’s about understanding biology, behavior, and long-term management.

A new study indicates that roughly half become habituated to the smell of DEET over time, reducing its effectiveness as a repellent

Spicy bug season is just around the corner.

I wonder what gigantic nests we will get to see this year.

Here is a guide to the most commonly seen in the north woods.

🕷️ NOT ALL BUGS ARE BAD 🕷️

Meet the Wheel Bug one of nature’s most effective pest controllers.

At first glance, this insect looks like something out of a science fiction movie, but wheel bugs are actually beneficial predators that help keep pest populations in check. They feed on caterpillars, Japanese beetles, aphids, stink bugs, and many other insects that can damage gardens and landscapes.

While they can deliver a painful bite if handled, wheel bugs are not aggressive and would much rather be left alone to do their job.

The next time you spot one in your yard, consider letting it stay. It’s working hard to help maintain a healthy balance in the ecosystem, without costing you a dime.

Have you ever seen a wheel bug before? Let us know in the comments!

A Thought on Environmental Impact

If we’re going to have honest conversations about the environment, we should talk about all impacts, not just the ones we see.

People often focus on mosquito control, but rarely discuss:

• Large-scale land clearing and development
• Wetland drainage and alteration
• Shoreline modification
• Habitat fragmentation
• Road construction
• Agricultural runoff
• Invasive species
• Loss of native plant communities
• Fertilizer and nutrient loading into lakes and rivers

These changes affect thousands of acres and can permanently alter ecosystems.

That doesn’t mean mosquito control has zero impact. Every human activity has some impact.

The question shouldn’t be whether an activity has an impact. The question should be:

“How significant is that impact, and is it being managed responsibly?”

As a licensed pest control company, we follow product labels, use targeted applications, avoid blooming plants whenever possible, and focus on reducing mosquitoes and ticks where people spend time outdoors.

Reasonable people can disagree on where the balance should be.

But if we’re going to discuss environmental stewardship, let’s make sure we’re looking at the whole picture, not just one piece of it.
