Most homes have one fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink. And most people have never used one.

Here's what you should know:

➡️ Kitchen: A Class B extinguisher (grease and oil fires) within reach of the stove, not buried in a cabinet
➡️ Garage/workshop: Class B:C covers flammable liquids and electrical equipment
➡️ General rooms: ABC-rated covers the most common fire types in one unit

Fire extinguishers expire. Check the pressure gauge. If the needle is in the red, it won't work when you need it.

And if a fire is bigger than a wastebasket, get out and call 911. Extinguishers are for small fires only. 🔥

Water damage doesn't stay in one room. When a De Pere homeowner called us, moisture had already spread to the living room, bedroom, game room, and storage room. That's four spaces all taking on water at the same time.

Our crew got to work fast, removing soaked carpets and baseboards in every affected area and setting up commercial drying equipment. We monitored moisture levels daily until every surface hit acceptable readings. The storage room needed extra attention, with lower drywall sections removed, dried, and repaired.

It's Fire Prevention Week. And most homes in Northeast Wisconsin have smoke detectors, but a lot of them aren't set up right.

1️⃣ Every bedroom needs its own detector, plus one in the hallway outside sleeping areas
2️⃣ One on every level, including the basement
3️⃣ Over 10 years old? Replace it, not just test it
4️⃣ Interconnected detectors (when one goes off, they all go off) are the standard for a reason

Test yours this week. If you can't remember when you installed them, that's your answer.

Kitchen grease fires are the most common residential fire in the U.S. And the biggest mistake people make is instinctive: throwing water on it.

Water on a grease fire doesn't put it out. It flashes to steam and sends burning grease everywhere.

If a pan catches fire:

➡️ Turn off the burner
➡️ Slide a metal lid over the pan to cut off oxygen
➡️ Leave it covered and let it cool

Never move the pan. Never use water. Never throw flour on it (flour is combustible).

If it spreads beyond the pan, get everyone out and call 911. We'd rather you never need us for this one. 🔥
