A look back at a parking lot lighting project in Phelan, where MTE Electric serviced elevated exterior lighting to help keep the property properly illuminated.

Throwback Thursday — The fuse wasn't the problem. 🔧⚡

During this commercial service call in Victorville, a hot water heater was repeatedly blowing fuses.

Rather than simply replacing the fuses and hoping for the best, we tested the electrical system to find out why they were failing.

Using our thermal imaging camera, we identified excessive heat at the connection between the 50-amp three-phase breaker and the panel busbar. The problem wasn't at the fuse—it was inside the electrical panel.

Finding the source of an electrical problem is what troubleshooting is all about.

Conversion or Replacement Depends on the Existing System

There isn't one correct answer for every parking lot.

A few failed lights in an otherwise well-maintained lighting system may be excellent candidates for LED conversion. Damaged fixtures or a parking lot with widespread fixture failures may justify replacing the entire group with new LED fixtures instead.

The goal should be to consider the condition of the existing equipment, expected service life, energy use, light output, maintenance access, and long-term maintenance costs before deciding which approach makes the most sense.

Throwback Thursday – LED Wall Pack Upgrade at Family Medical Center

For this service call in Phelan, MTE Electric removed the older exterior bulkhead light fixtures and installed new multi-wattage LED wall packs along the side of the medical office building.

The goal was simple: provide better exterior illumination around the side entrance doors used by staff leaving after dark.

Upgrading older exterior lighting can improve visibility, reduce maintenance, and provide more useful light where it is actually needed.

Is the LED Lamp Rated for the Fixture?

Lamp selection should involve more than matching the base, wattage, and light output.

Many parking lot fixtures are enclosed, and not every LED replacement lamp is rated for use inside an enclosed fixture. Heat generated inside the housing needs to be considered, particularly with outdoor fixtures exposed to high ambient temperatures.

The manufacturer's specifications should be checked to make sure the LED lamp is suitable for the fixture and the environment in which it will operate.

🔧 Throwback Thursday: Smarter Lighting Controls in Apple Valley

For this commercial service call, MTE Electric replaced an outdated mechanical time clock with an astronomical digital time clock controlling the parking lot and exterior building lights.

Unlike a basic mechanical timer, the new control automatically adjusts its on-and-off schedule as sunrise and sunset times change throughout the year. It also includes battery backup to help retain its programming during a power interruption.

A practical upgrade that provides more reliable lighting control while eliminating the need for repeated seasonal timer adjustments.
