A quick safety test worth two minutes of your Saturday.

Your garage door is the heaviest thing in your house that moves on its own, and it is designed to stop and reverse if someone or something is underneath it. That safety feature can wear out over time, and most homeowners never think to check it.

Here is how. Lay something solid flat on the floor where the door closes, like a roll of paper towels. Hit the button to close the door. The moment it touches, it should stop and back up on its own.

Then test the sensors near the floor. Start the door closing and wave your foot through the beam. It should reverse right away.
