If your sprinklers don’t retract when they turn off like the ones in the picture, they need to be repaired or replaced.

The purpose of pop-ups is for them to be below the soil when off and rise above the turf grass when on for adequate coverage. Many homeowners attempt to raise these with risers which elevates the whole fixture and increases breakage risk. Having the proper fixture based on location and turf type can make a night and day difference. A properly working system will water your grass better and with less water.
