Poor bathroom ventilation shows up in small ways first: fogged mirrors, lifting paint, and musty odors. The usual causes are an undersized fan, a duct that does not vent outdoors properly, or a fan that simply does not run long enough. The fix is straightforward: size the fan correctly, keep the duct run short and direct, vent it outdoors, and consider a timer or humidity control.

Meanwhile, in a Cary basement: engineered hardwood is in.

Why we like it here: you get the natural look of real wood, good durability, and better dimensional stability than solid hardwood. It is also easy to maintain and gives the basement a much more finished feel.

Most of the look and feel of hardwood, with a construction that can make more sense below grade.

Trim day. Measure, cut, level, nail, repeat.

This is the stage where a basement starts looking less like a job site and more like a finished room. Clean lines around the windows, doors, and baseboards make a big difference.

One thing people do not always think about with flooring: how it sounds.

In a basement, some floating LVP floors can sound more hollow underfoot. Glue down engineered hardwood can feel noticeably more solid.

Before choosing a floor, think about how it feels and sounds, not just how it looks.

The homeowner caught this before the trim went in.

The switch box would have overlapped the window trim, so we moved it five inches and patched the drywall.

Small details like this make a finished room feel right.

Larger tile can make a small bathroom feel calmer because fewer grout lines create a more continuous surface. The layout still matters, and larger formats need a flatter, better-prepared base. On shower floors, smaller tile can still make more sense for slope and traction. Keeping the grout close to the tile color helps preserve the cleaner look.

Garage update: power is on the way.

Our electricians ran about 100 feet of conduit out to the new garage, and we upgraded the homeowner's panel while we were at it. Inspection is tomorrow.

Not the most visible part of the build, but it is one of the parts that has to be right.

Good lighting is about layers, not one fixture in the middle of the ceiling. Ambient light fills the room, task lighting helps where you actually work, and accent lighting adds depth. Under cabinet lighting is especially useful because it fills the shadow created by overhead fixtures. Plan the layers, switching, and color temperature before electrical rough-in so everything works together from the start.

Final stages on our Cary basement.

Floors are done, cabinets are in, and trim is going up. The homeowner came down and decided he’d rather lose a door, so we’re taking it out and trimming the opening instead.

Next up: caulk, paint, and final wall touch-ups.

A combination that works in a lot of modern kitchens and holds up after the trend cycle moves on.

Soft white on the counters and backsplash keeps the room bright and lets the wood carry the character. Warm wood on the cabinetry does the work white cannot do alone. Without it, a white and black palette can read cold and a little clinical. Matte black appears in small amounts: the oven, window frames, and fittings. It is punctuation, not a third major surface.

Proportion matters more than the exact shades. Let the lighter surfaces carry most of the room, use wood as the main source of warmth, and keep black as a smaller accent. In a room with limited natural light, too much black can quickly make the space feel heavier.

Worth saving for your selections meeting.
