Lately, we've been responding to an increase in house fires throughout our community. One trend we've noticed is fires caused by the improper handling, charging, or storage of lithium-ion batteries.

Every Local Heroes recipient has a story of service—and today, we're honored to share one of them.

Firefighter II Riley Prince has been serving with the Fuquay-Varina Fire Department since 2019, but his journey began much earlier as a Junior Firefighter. His passion for serving others, commitment to his team, and dedication to our community earned him recognition as a 2025 Fuquay-Varina Local Hero.

Today, Riley is helping restart the department's Junior Firefighter program so future generations have the same opportunities that inspired him.

On July 15, 2022, a single lightning strike changed everything.

What started as an ordinary day quickly became one of the most difficult moments imaginable as a home was engulfed in flames. In the aftermath came uncertainty, loss, and the long process of putting life back together.

But through that experience, something unexpected happened.

Watching a restoration team help rebuild not just a house, but a family's sense of normalcy, inspired our Business Development Manager to make a career change. They saw firsthand the impact this work has on people during some of the hardest days of their lives and knew they wanted to be part of it.

Today, that same home has been restored, and the person who once stood in the driveway watching it burn now helps others navigate their own disasters with confidence and hope.

Sometimes your greatest challenge becomes your greatest purpose.
