🥶 Before the First Freeze: Is Your Outside Plumbing Ready?
One cold October night can be enough to expose a weak spot in your plumbing.
Garden hoses left connected, dripping outdoor faucets, failing shutoff valves, and pipes running through garages, crawl spaces, exterior walls, or unheated basements can all become vulnerable when temperatures drop. Chicago O’Hare’s normal first 32°F fall temperature is October 19, while Milwaukee’s average is October 22, but freezing weather can arrive earlier.
Before the first freeze:
🔧 Disconnect garden hoses and accessories
💧 Check outdoor faucets for drips or leaks
🏠 Inspect exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces, and basements
🚰 Make sure you know where your main water shutoff is
⚠️ Have leaking valves, damaged faucets, or questionable water lines checked before colder weather arrives
A little preparation now can help prevent a much bigger plumbing problem later.
