We turned this ordinary backyard into a 30’ × 60’ squarely laid-out volleyball court base, transforming what was previously a steeply sloped area into a near-level, usable grade suitable for a volleyball court.

We brought in approximately 10–15 truckloads of CR8 crush and run, raising the lower corner nearly 2 feet, while carefully grading, compacting, and squaring the entire 30’ × 60’ court area. The finished base will eventually be covered with outdoor volleyball matting.

We also brought in approximately 5 truckloads of dirt around the perimeter, grading it into the existing yard to eliminate abrupt drop-offs and keep the surrounding backyard usable.

Another backyard transformed and ready for the next phase.

We turned this unusable grass area into a 300 sq. ft. concrete patio, connecting the driveway to the back steps and basement entrance while creating a great new space for a picnic table, grilling, and other outdoor activities.

We installed 4,000 PSI concrete with fiber mesh at 4–5 inches thick, with rolled-down edges in case vehicles need to drive over the slab. Everything was properly pitched away from the house to prevent water from sitting against the foundation or pooling on the patio.

Finished with properly spaced control joints and a clean broom finish — start to finish in just 5 hours.

Some days we have big jobs, and some days we chase down the small ones for our customers.

This 3’ × 85” bench slab and 3’ × 3’ sidewalk repair took nearly the same amount of time as pouring 14 yards of concrete yesterday.

With a 5-yard minimum to order concrete from Chaney Enterprises, small jobs like these can quickly become expensive. We’d have to line up several of them in the same day just to make ordering a concrete truck worthwhile for both us and the customer.

Luckily, we have our pull-behind gas mixer for exactly this reason. It allows us to efficiently handle smaller projects around a yard of concrete without the cost of ordering a full truck.

Big job or small job, we have the equipment to get it done.

This backyard project involved removing and replacing a 75’ × 10’ center section of concrete between two existing slabs, making it a little more challenging since the customer only wanted the center portion replaced.

The project was located at the top of a long, steep driveway, but fortunately we still had Bobcat access. We were able to remove and replace approximately 14 yards of concrete in just a two-day turnaround.

Day 1: Removal and grading
Day 2: Concrete placement and finishing

The new slab was poured with 4,000 PSI concrete with fiber mesh at no less than 5” thick, finished with a broom finish and properly spaced control joints. We also incorporated a slight swale to ensure water drains out of the backyard and down the driveway.

First job of the day: basement areaway drain & sump pump replacement.

Today we’re replacing this 3’ × 3’ basement entrance areaway, installing a new 9” × 9” NDS catch basin, and replacing the existing sump pump.

The new concrete areaway will be properly pitched directly to the new drain. We’re also raising the outside perimeter and sealing openings where sand and debris had been washing into the entrance.

Many older areaway drains use only a small 1”–2” pipe leading to the sump, which can easily clog with leaves, sand and debris. The larger NDS catch basin gives that debris a place to collect before it reaches the drain line and makes routine cleaning much easier.

Finally, we’re replacing the sump pump. The sump pump is the heartbeat of your waterproofing system. The old pump pictured isn’t necessarily faulty, but we recommend replacement around the 5-year mark rather than waiting for failure.

We use Zoeller 50 Series Mighty-Mate pumps — 100% factory tested, made in the USA, and a brand that has proven itself to us for decades.

How is exposed aggregate concrete actually made?

Contrary to popular belief, the stone isn’t added on top. It’s already in the concrete mix.

The concrete is poured, floated and finished normally. Once it reaches the proper stage of set, we spray a surface retarder over the finished concrete. From that point on, the surface can no longer be touched.

The retarder slows the hardening of the very top layer while the concrete underneath continues to cure.

About 24 hours later, we return and pressure wash away that softened layer, exposing the natural stone underneath. A few days later, when needed, a muriatic acid wash can be used to remove any remaining cement film, further expose the aggregate and bring out the finished appearance of the stone.

Timing and experience are everything with this type of finish.

One of today’s jobs is the replacement of a 17’ × 3’ sidewalk and step.

This project comes with a unique challenge. Ordering ready-mix concrete requires a 5-yard minimum, while this job only requires about 1 yard. To keep the project cost-effective for our customer, we hand-mixed the concrete on site using our pull-behind gas-powered mixer.

Every job presents its own challenges, and we find the right solution to make the work affordable and practical without sacrificing quality.

The new sidewalk and step were poured 4–5” thick using 4,000 PSI concrete, with properly spaced control joints, the correct pitch for drainage, and a clean broom finish.

At the customer’s request, we reinstalled the existing metal railing since it was still in good condition. The railing posts were set securely in concrete and properly plumbed.

On this project, we are replacing the existing asphalt driveway with a brand-new concrete driveway while widening it by approximately one full vehicle width. The additional space will greatly improve accessibility, functionality, and everyday drivability while giving the home a cleaner, more finished appearance.

As with every driveway we install, this one is being poured using 4,000 PSI air-entrained concrete with fiber mesh reinforcement at a thickness of no less than 5 inches. We believe quality materials and proper installation are the key to a driveway that will perform for decades. While asphalt requires routine sealing and maintenance throughout its life, a properly installed concrete driveway offers superior longevity, durability, and long-term value.

The center control joint will be diamond saw-cut tomorrow to help control shrinkage cracking as the concrete cures. Topsoil, seed, and mulch will be applied as needed to restore all disturbed areas.

On this project, we noticed a concrete block foundation wall beginning to bow inward under soil pressure. Rather than waiting for the problem to worsen, we recommended installing 10-foot structural steel I-beams to permanently stabilize the wall and help prevent any additional movement.

Each I-beam is securely fastened into the floor system above using ½-inch lag bolts through pressure-treated 2x8 blocking installed between the 2x10 floor joists. At the base, every beam is anchored into an 8-inch concrete footing, creating a solid structural support system designed to resist further wall deflection.
