Locally Owned HVAC Companies vs. Private Equity-Owned Companies. What’s the Difference?
Take a look at the picture. It shows hundreds of HVAC companies that have been acquired by private equity firms…many in the Annapolis area. Most keep their original names, trucks, and branding, so homeowners may not even realize ownership has changed.
Why does this matter?
With a locally owned company, the owners are often directly involved in the business. They live in your community, and their reputation depends on the quality of their work.
With private equity ownership comes investor expectations, revenue targets, and potentially greater pressure on technicians to sell rather than repair.
That’s not to say every corporate owned company is bad or every local company is good. There are great technicians everywhere.
But here’s the question homeowners should be asking: Is the technician coming to my home to fix my system or sell me a new one?
