Worthy of a read. 💛

We were only 7 years old.

We had just finished an expansion when the Great Recession hit. Not unlike many businesses and families, we were deer in headlights. We didn’t know which way to turn.

So we pulled up our bootstraps and made a plan.
We had 52,000 square feet of greenhouse space to work with during the “off season.” We would figure it out.

My mind runs fast when I sleep. 😂
If you really only knew. 😜

And then, p**f. An idea.💡
What if we grew greens during the winter and took them to market?🌱🤷‍♀️

It sounds so simple now. It wasn’t.
Winter had always been our downtime, the time when I could slow down, breathe a little, and be more present as a mom. Suddenly, we were talking about changing that completely.🥺

We started small.
We cocooned ourselves into a small portion of the greenhouse to conserve energy because propane prices were at an all-time high. We experimented. We lost crops. We learned. We refined. We tried again.😖

And here we are, all these years later, still learning.
That little idea became so much more than growing greens in a greenhouse. It became a new chapter for our farm.📕

It eventually became the foundation for what is now HillTop Crate and, years later, The Farm Shed. Looking back, I can see the connection between all of those pieces.⏪

At the time?
It felt like a brick wall had fallen directly on our young business. We were trying to figure out how to keep going.

My husband worked off the farm for a few months. I grew, not just as a farmer, but as a business owner, a problem solver, and, apparently, an idea maker. 💡😜

I don’t often look back. There’s an old saying that the windshield is bigger than the rear-view mirror.

I believe that.

March forward. Figure it out. Keep moving.
Because owning a business is not for the faint of heart.And owning an agricultural business?
Well, that’s a whole different ballgame. ⚾🚜

One thing I have learned over these years is this:
“Our greatest failure can become our greatest success.’

I'm grateful for this life, the business we have built, my incredible team, the customers and community that have stood by us for 21 years. Thank you. 💛

Oh, how I remember the dayzzz. 😂
There is just something about the first day of school that takes you back, isn’t there?😜

Today I am sending the biggest good luck, you’ve got this! To all of our friends in Dexter and the surrounding school districts. We know some of you have already been back at it, but today marks the first day for many of our local kiddos.🚌

A special shout-out to all of our friends in the Dexter Community School District. 🏫
I know the first day doesn’t happen by itself.

Countless hours of behind-the-scenes work have gone into teacher education, class assignments, registration, transportation schedules, building maintenance, technology, planning, organizing, and all the little details that make a school year come together.🌎

Today, I'm also thinking about the people who make it all happen.

To the teachers, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, administrative assistants, cafeteria teams, counselors, volunteers, and everyone who shows up each day.💛

Thank you.

Thank you for caring for our community’s young people.
Thank you for the work that often goes unseen.
And thank you for helping our kids learn, grow, and find their way.

Labor Day.

The unofficial rite of passage into fall. Football games, leaves beginning to change, cooler mornings and a little slower pace.🍂

Today, I chose the slower pace.

Snuggles with my dog, a late start to the day and tea enjoyed without looking at the clock. ☕️🐾 Because sometimes you just need a day to breathe.

I did accomplish one thing today—the Farm Shed is fully stocked. 🤣

Spinach, romaine lettuce, peppers, green beans and tomatoes have all been reloaded for the day. Corn is waiting in the fridge. 🌽 And there are fresh bouquets of flowers waiting for you, too. 💐

So wherever this Labor Day finds you, be safe and enjoy the extra day. 🗓️

And thank you for understanding as I take a little time today to be a mom. 💛

I know there are hundreds of families in our area without power right now, and unfortunately, restoration is an unknown. ⚡️

More than anything, I’m hoping you’re safe and that your homes haven’t sustained any damage.

My husband and David have the generator up and running at the greenhouse, and we’re opening the doors to anyone who needs a little help getting through the outage.

Heading into the holiday weekend. 💫

From meet-and-greets at school, to school supply lists, to trying to squeeze in the last
of summer, how did we get here so fast?! 😞

Wherever this holiday weekend finds you, I hope you enjoy the extra day and soak up these last days of summer. ☀️

🌽 The Farm Shed is loaded with all the flavors of summer! You’ll find watermelon, sweet corn, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and yummy local cheese. Plenty of goodness for your holiday weekend.

September 1, 2026.

The feel like temperature is 99 degrees. 🥵
Apparently, we have one more day of the “Welcome to September” weather pattern. 🥴

Are you holding up?

Today, I’m taking you back to January.
Snow. Sheep. And my very first shearing day. ❄️🐑

It was a cold, snowy day when I spent the day at Great Lakes Lamb for my first-ever shearing day. The ewes that would be lambing first for the season were the ones getting shorn.And me? I was green.I knew enough to know that I didn’t exactly know what I was doing in the barn. And honestly, that’s okay. Sometimes the best way to learn is to observe. Watch how things are done. Pay attention. See where you can be useful. Learn the rhythm of the barn and the animals before you jump in.

Being on a farm that is a complete 360° operation, from raising the sheep to caring for them, shearing and everything in between, was such a fantastic experience for me. 🐑💛

I could probably just sit in the pasture with the sheep. Even in winter. The bells around the ewes’ necks, the soft sound of them moving through the pasture, the occasional baa. Count me in! 🔔🐑

So while September is giving us one last blast of summer, I’m going to keep looking at these January photos and reminding myself that cooler days really are coming.

And maybe, just maybe I’ll be invited back to help in the sheep barn again. Wink wink. 😉😉🐑🔔

Hoss. Hossy Boy. And every once in a while, a few other names, because, well, it’s Hoss. 😬😂

Hoss has always been one of the more feisty steers in the barn for David. An escape artist. The one who somehow managed to dirty his water, if you know what I mean. 💩And always, ALWAYS the one in the barn yelling, “Meeee!”📢

Hoss had his moments, and at times our entire family was literally running for our money as he strutted around outside his pasture. There were plenty of days when raising Hoss required a little extra patience, a lot of work, and maybe a few deep breaths. 😆

But this week at the Chelsea Community Fair, all those hours David spent with Hoss paid off.

For all the craziness Hoss brought to the barn, no one could miss his presence in the show ring.

Hoss stood tall. He stood proud. He showed with fortitude.

Senior Showmanship was first up for the duo, and watching Hoss and David work together was something special. The hours of building that trust between them were evident.

Together, David and Hoss were awarded Grand Champion Senior Showman.🏆

Then came the afternoon weight classes.

David would be in one of the last classes, and Hoss weighed in at a whopping 1,530 pounds! 🙃They went on to place first in their weight class, earning their spot in the final drive.

And then came the moment, Hoss and David were awarded Reserve Grand Champion Market Beef!🏆

What a week. What a pair. And what a journey.

David, I am so incredibly proud of you. Hoss was never an easy steer, and you met every challenge. You never gave up on him.🥹

With this already-lengthy post, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a BIG thank you to Eder & Diver Insurance Company, and Keri Poulter, Michigan Real Estate, Reinhart Realtors for purchasing Hoss at the Chelsea Community Fair Auction.
