Had a local family buy 3 macfox class 2 e bikes last week and they sent us this photo.

Mom and Dad did a 10k run that morning and then went on a long bike ride that evening.

To summarize hours of phone calls and being on hold last week.

DMV: you need a motor vehicle sellers permit to sell anything over 20mph with the updated laws for polk country.

Ok, how do I get that?

DMV: that's the Iowa dot not us, call them.

DOT: those devices are not recognized to the state as a motor vehicle so a motor vehicle sellers permit wouldn't work since they can't be titled.

Ok, so what would I need to do so my business is following the laws and avoiding fines?

DOT: not sure, I would call the DMV.

If anyone has a Komatsu D355A for sale let me know....

Late start today.

I apologize for the last minute update but we just found out my little guys doctors appointment will take 3 hours vs 1 hour.

I won't be at the shop until around noon.

We could use your feedback.

I'll try and keep this short and to the point. Several states have passed and many more are working on passing laws to make it illegal to sell any electric mobility device that is outside of local laws. We are trying to stay ahead of that and are trying to only sell items that meet all local laws.

The issue:
Very few people want them... Our sales are down about 65% over the past 2.5 months. Instead of buying a legal item that we can offer most customers that come in opt to just order a e bike or scooter online that has a much higher top speed and or power rating.

What this means:
Based on the last 2.5 months our local sales and service have dropped so much the cost of having the business open is significantly more than revenue coming in.

Options:
Risk it and offer the more powerful and highspeed options at the risk of fines or legal ramifications.

Close the store location and only run the online side of the business (custom made items we build and ship out) and offer mobile repair services removing the overhead cost of the shop location.

Take what capital we have remaining, put it all on black and let it ride.

I'll be back in town this evening and will work on trying to get caught up on the 107 missed calls and text I received over the week I was on vacation.

The shop will be open at 9am Monday morning and I assume the phone will be ringing most of the day. If you can't get ahold of me the best option is to send an email and I'll reach out as soon as I have availability.

Few PSA:

The shop will be closed from July 31st to August 9th. I am taking my kids on a summer vacation.

Blocked numbers:

With the amount of spam calls and text the shop phone was getting I had to add a software that auto blocks any number that calls/text the shop phone 3 times with in 5 minutes outside of business hours. If your number has been blocked this is why. If you need me to manually unblock it please send us an email to our business email and I will take care of it.

Legal e bikes:

With the laws that have been updated and passed I just want to remind everyone that an e bike that has a manufacturer max speed of over 20 is also illegal even if it has pedals. A class 3 e bike can go 28mph but only on the roadways and can not have a working throttle (pedal assist only and rider must be 16 years old).

We have a nice selection of completely legal class 2 e bike options but so far no one is interested due to them only going 20mph. Unfortunately this is the law and we are trying to offer legal options that don't put the user or parents at risk of tickets and fines. We will not be selling e-bikes that are not legal to avoid future issues.

Tonight I lost my wire st*****rs I bought in my first year of college (2006). Nothing special and honestly a pretty cheap pair but we had a solid 20 years together.

The amount of repairs and crazy electronic contraptions those st*****rs were responsible for is enough to make a grown man cry, so long old friend.

Leaving the shop this evening and walked out to a group of 5 ish kids blazing down the business sidewalk in front of the shop. I let them know that riding on a business sidewalk is illegal so be extra careful to which they replied "shut up Karen". I think this generation is going to be alright 🤣
