DIY tip: how to get crisp paint lines with painter's tape

Those blue lines on this garage job are doing a lot of quiet work. A few habits that make tape actually pay off:

1. Start clean and dry. Tape won't grip dusty or damp trim.
2. Burnish the edge. Run a putty knife or an old credit card along it so paint can't creep underneath.
3. Seal it. Brush a thin coat of the base color over the tape edge first. Any bleed is the same color and disappears, and the top coat stays sharp.
4. Pull at the right time. Peel back at a low angle while the last coat is still slightly soft. If it's fully dry, score the edge with a utility knife first.
5. Don't leave it up for days in the sun. The adhesive bakes on and can tear the finish when it comes off.

Finished-job Friday: a back-entry staircase, refreshed.

On this one our crew painted the railings, balusters and risers a crisp white and gave the treads a soft gray. The two-tone look does practical work too. The gray treads hide everyday foot traffic, and the white risers frame each step so it reads clearly coming down at dusk.

Stairs like these take a beating from sun, snow and boots, so a fresh coat before winter goes a long way.

Leaves are starting to come down around Andover and North Andover, which makes now a good time to get on the list for a fall gutter cleaning.

Friday finished-job spotlight: a contemporary home here in Andover with long runs of vertical siding.

The homeowners kept the same color, and that's a smart call more often than people think. Look at the bottom boards in the before shot. The strip closest to the grass takes the most sun, sprinkler spray and splash-back, so it fades and dries out first. A fresh coat seals that wood back up before winter gets a chance at it.

The photo is one of our trim repairs in progress: rotted boards cut out and new wood fit in before primer and paint. Paint only lasts as long as the wood under it, so we fix soft trim first instead of painting over it.

Fall deck tip from our crew: that gray, green-tinged film on shaded deck stairs usually isn't just age. It's often mildew and algae, and it gets slick once wet leaves start piling up.

Before you think about stain or sealer, get it clean:
1. Sweep off leaves and debris.
2. Scrub with an oxygen-based deck cleaner and a stiff brush. Skip straight chlorine bleach, which can be harsh on wood.
3. Rinse well. If you use a pressure washer, keep it on a low setting and hold the tip back so you don't fuzz up the grain.
4. Let the wood dry at least 48 hours before any stain or sealer.

Then drip a little water on a tread. If it soaks right in, the wood is ready for fresh protection before winter.

Same house, same front walk. Look at the rooflines first. The rake and fascia trim had weathered to a tired brown, and the front portico columns were peeling. Now the trim reads crisp white again, and the portico ties right back into the siding.

Trim is the frame of a house. When it wears out, the whole place looks older than it is. When it is fresh, everything else looks cared for.
