Alaska IBEW The IBEW is among the world’s strongest labor organizations, representing workers in a range of skilled occupations in a wide variety of fields.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on November 28, 1891. IBEW Local 1547 was chartered in Alaska on October 1, 1946, assuming the jurisdiction of IBEW work in Alaska from Local 46 in Seattle, and continues to advocate for safety and protection of the rights of electrical and communications workers, as well as local government employees, health ca

re industry employees, and many more non-construction occupations. Local 1547 represents workers in many diverse construction classifications including power linemen, inside wiremen, power plant workers and technicians, mechanics, warehouse workers, line clearance tree trimmers and heavy equipment operators. Classifications in communications include telephone linemen, installation and repair workers, telephone operators, central office technicians, cable maintenance workers, and fiber optic specialists, just to name a few. We also take pride in knowing that our efforts in strengthening safety and worker rights benefit many other workers in our state, not just those we represent. Traditionally, people think of IBEW members as people who work with electricity—but over the years, other classifications have joined the ranks of Local 1547. Some of the many classifications we represent are: cooks, certified nursing assistants, clerks, accounting specialists, engineers, city and municipal employees, property management workers, maintenance custodians, gardeners, librarians, plant services workers, programmers, radar operators, cashiers and x-ray technicians. With close to 5000 members, IBEW Local 1547 is, we believe, one of the strongest unions in the state of Alaska.

Brother Manny Acuna was presented with the very first proof of the commemorative coin inspired by his original artwork by IBEW Local 1547 Business Manager Brannon Nichols and Assistant Business Manager Curtis Dunham.

This commemorative coin will proudly represent IBEW Local 1547 at the 41st IBEW International Convention, where it will be traded among brothers and sisters from Locals across North America. We're confident it will become one of this year's most sought-after collector's pieces.

Brother Acuna's artwork has made an impact far beyond the coin. The design was also featured on our convention logo apparel, where it quickly became a member favorite. The response has been incredible, and thanks to its popularity, we're already expanding the design to additional apparel.

Brother Acuna, thank you for sharing your talent with Local 1547. Your artwork showcases the creativity and pride that exists within our membership, and we are honored to recognize your outstanding contribution.

HONORING BROTHER KEN DECKER’S LASTING LEGACY

Today, we had the honor of presenting Brother Ken Decker with the very first proof of our 41st IBEW International Convention collector's trading pin, featuring his iconic formline artwork.

Brother Decker, a retired member of IBEW Local 1547 and a gifted Indigenous artist, generously shared this design with our Local years ago. Since then, it has become one of the defining symbols of Local 1547 and a source of pride for our members across Alaska.

Seeing Ken's reaction to the finished pin made every step of the process worthwhile. He admired the craftsmanship and intricate line work, noting how challenging it is to achieve that level of detail and asking where the pins were produced.

This September, Brother Decker's artwork will proudly represent Local 1547 at the 41st IBEW International Convention, where the pin will be traded and collected by IBEW members from across North America.

Thank you, Brother Decker, for sharing your talent, your culture, and your artistry with our Local. We are proud to carry your work—and your legacy—with us.

Big Worker Win - Unemployment Insurance Benefit Increase in Alaska!

HB302, increasing unemployment insurance benefits for the first time in 17 years, is now law.

Provisions in this bill include an increase in maximum weekly benefit from $370 to up to $470/week, tripling the dependent (i.e. per child) benefit from $24 to $72/week, and most importantly indexing maximum weekly benefits to wage-based inflation in the future, so that benefits won’t erode like they did over the last two decades.

Alaska IBEW Local 1547 has been trying to get an increase to these amounts and inflation-proofing for close to a decade.

This bill helped us climb roughly ten spots in the state rankings of maximum weekly UI benefits. This is a true pro-worker piece of legislation and will go a long way in helping IBEW 1547 members and workers across the state.
