Meet Samuel Allen, Electrical EIT and one of the newest members of Kuna’s Electrical team!

Growing up in Honduras, Samuel experienced frequent power outages and saw electrical infrastructure that was often poorly constructed. Those experiences inspired him to become an electrical engineer and design systems that solve real problems and serve people well.

Samuel recently relocated to Alaska, a place he had dreamed of living long before his first visit. He is excited to take on the state’s unique engineering challenges, learn from Kuna’s multidisciplinary team, and work on projects that are both challenging and rewarding.

When he is not working, Samuel hopes to explore every corner of Alaska, learn to snowboard, hike more, and visit places such as Valdez and Sitka.

The unofficial Kuna Friday uniform is getting increasingly elaborate.

We now have two generations of Kuna Hawaiian shirts, several classic tropical prints, a bicycle-themed contribution from Nick, and enough collective confidence to pose for photographic evidence.

The newer black Kuna shirts feature fully Alaska-inspired imagery, while the lighter design represents the original edition. Both pair equally well with engineering and architectural expertise and the knowledge that it is finally Friday.

Meet Daniel Artzer! 🌿

We're excited to introduce Daniel Artzer, one of the newest members of Kuna Engineering's Environmental team.

Daniel has always loved spending time outdoors, so pursuing a career that helps protect the environment was a natural fit. After moving to Alaska, he wanted to become more connected to the place he now calls home—and help communities tackle the unique environmental challenges that come with living and working in the Last Frontier.

Whether he's supporting projects in the field or working with clients, Daniel believes integrity is the key to achieving successful outcomes for both communities and the environment.

When he's off the clock, you'll usually find him snowboarding, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country skiing, playing music, or planning his next adventure with his wife.

One thing's for sure: if there's coffee nearby, Daniel's happy. ☕

A big milestone in Kotzebue! 🏗️

The first structural steel has been set for the Native Village of Kotzebue's Qikiqtagruk facility.

Working from the corner of 4th Avenue and Lagoon Street, the project team is using a mobile crane to lift and place the steel framing on thermopile foundations as construction moves into its next phase.

It's exciting to see this important community project rise from the ground. We can't wait to share more progress as the building takes shape!

Kuna hit the links for the Society of American Military Engineers annual golf tournament on Friday, June 19!

Bill Guevremont, Matt Narus, Daniel Mariani, and Samuel Allen made up our team, with Marlene Stengel along to cheer them on and provide moral support. We may not have taken home any prizes, but everyone had a great time enjoying the sunshine, the scenery, and one of the nicest days we’ve had so far this year.

Thanks to SAME for hosting a fun day on the course!

👋 Meet Malia Barlow!

Malia is spending the summer with Kuna Engineering as an intern while studying Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the University of Michigan. She'll be a junior this fall and is using her internship experience to explore potential career paths in engineering and environmental fields.

Growing up with a love for math, Malia was drawn to engineering because it offered both a challenge and endless opportunities. Today, she's discovering just how many different directions an engineering degree can take her.

As a NANA shareholder, Malia encourages younger students interested in STEM to stick with it, even when it gets difficult:

"Know that it is going to be a lot of work, but when you get to the end, everything that you did and will do will always be something that you can be proud of."

A few fun facts about Malia:
🧩 She's a serious Sudoku fan and loves tackling the hardest puzzles she can find.
🎧 She never leaves home without her headphones.
🫖 Tea is her beverage of choice.
🪚 If she could instantly master any skill, she'd choose carpentry.

We're glad to have Malia on our team this summer and can't wait to see what she accomplishes in the future!

Between STEM activities in Buckland and Kivalina, Rose Walker — who grew up in Buckland — took Miguel Villacorta shee-fishing out on the ice near Kotzebue.

Moments like these highlight the importance of local knowledge, shared experiences, and community connections across Northwest Alaska. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from one another both inside and outside the classroom. ❄️🐟

Kuna Engineering’s Rose Walker and Miguel Villacorta recently had the opportunity to visit Buckland and Kivalina through the BWISE Program, working with students on hands-on STEM activities focused on creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.

From balloon-powered race cars and catapults to community mapping and engineering challenges, students brought incredible imagination and enthusiasm to every activity. We’re grateful to the schools and communities for welcoming us and allowing us to help inspire the next generation across rural Alaska. 💙
