🔆Summer Plumbing Safety Tips: Simple Ways to Protect Your Home

Summer is a wonderful time for family gatherings, outdoor projects, vacations, and enjoying Alaska’s longer days. However, the season can also place added demand on your home’s plumbing system. More laundry, additional guests, outdoor water use, and home improvement projects can increase the risk of leaks, water damage, and other plumbing problems.

A few simple plumbing safety steps can help protect your family, reduce unnecessary water waste, and keep your household running comfortably. Use this summer plumbing safety checklist to identify potential problems before they interrupt your plans.

1. Check Your Home for Hidden Water Leaks

Small leaks can quietly damage cabinets, flooring, walls, and personal belongings. They may also encourage mold growth and increase your water bill.

Take a few minutes to inspect:
* Under kitchen and bathroom sinks
* Around toilets and tubs
* Near your washing machine and dishwasher
* Around the refrigerator water line
* Near your water heater
* Inside crawlspaces, basements, and utility rooms
* Around outdoor faucets and hose connections

Look for puddles, water stains, peeling paint, damp insulation, corrosion, or musty odors. Listen for dripping or running water when fixtures are not being used.

The [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency](https://www.epa.gov/watersense/home-maintenance) recommends regularly checking for leaks and addressing them promptly to help prevent water waste and serious property damage.

2. Make Sure Everyone Knows Where the Main Water Shutoff Is

Knowing how to turn off your home’s water supply can make a major difference during a plumbing emergency. If a pipe bursts, an appliance hose breaks, or a fixture begins overflowing, quickly stopping the water can reduce damage.

Show responsible household members where the main shutoff valve is located and explain how to use it. Make sure the area around the valve is clear and accessible.

If the valve is difficult to turn, damaged, or heavily corroded, contact a professional Anchorage plumber for help. Do not force a valve that appears stuck, as this could cause it to break.

3. Inspect Outdoor Faucets and Garden Hoses

Outdoor plumbing receives more use during summer. Before connecting a garden hose, inspect the hose bib for cracks, looseness, or water leaking behind the siding.

Check hoses and attachments for:
* Cracks or worn sections
* Loose connections
* Damaged washers
* Bulges or weak spots
* Leaking spray nozzles

Turn outdoor faucets off completely after use. Leaving a hose under constant pressure can increase the chance of a sudden rupture or leak. Keep hoses out of walkways to help prevent trips and falls, especially when children or older adults are outdoors.

4. Check Appliance Water Lines

Washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, and ice makers depend on water supply lines that can deteriorate over time. Summer guests and outdoor activities may mean more dishes and laundry, placing additional demand on these connections.

Inspect appliance hoses for cracks, rust, moisture, or bulging. If a connection looks worn or begins leaking, stop using the appliance until the line can be evaluated.

Never place electrical cords or appliances near standing water. If water is close to an electrical outlet or device, keep everyone away and contact the appropriate professional for assistance.

5. Practice Safe Water Heater Care

Your water heater works throughout the year, even when outdoor temperatures are warmer. Check the surrounding area for moisture, rust, unusual sounds, or signs of corrosion. Keep combustible materials and household clutter away from the unit.

Hot water can cause serious burns, especially for young children and older adults. The [U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission](https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/pdfs/5098.pdf) recommends a residential water heater setting of approximately 120°F to help reduce the risk of tap-water scalding. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult a qualified professional if you are unsure how to check or adjust the temperature safely.

Never allow children to play near a water heater, exposed plumbing equipment, or utility controls.

6. Protect Your Plumbing During Summer Travel

Before leaving for a summer vacation, complete a quick plumbing safety inspection. Check faucets, toilets, appliance connections, the water heater, and visible pipes for leaks.

Additional precautions may include:
* Turning off water to the washing machine
* Asking a trusted person to check the home
* Using water-leak detectors near vulnerable areas
* Confirming that your sump pump is working properly
* Keeping emergency contact information readily available

Depending on your plumbing system, travel plans, and household needs, you may also consider shutting off the main water supply. Ask a professional plumber whether this is appropriate for your home before doing so.

7. Keep Household Drains Safe

Summer cooking and family gatherings can put additional strain on kitchen plumbing. Help protect your pipes by keeping grease, cooking oil, coffee grounds, bones, and fibrous food scraps out of the sink.

In bathrooms, only flush toilet paper and human waste. Wipes—including products labeled “flushable”—paper towels, cotton swabs, and personal care items should go in the trash.

Simple habits like these can reduce the risk of plumbing backups and help keep kitchens and bathrooms ready for daily use.

8. Call Before Starting an Outdoor Digging Project

Summer is a popular time to build fences, install landscaping, or complete other outdoor projects. Before digging, have underground utilities properly marked.

Even a small project can accidentally damage a buried water or gas line. Do not rely on memory or assumptions about where utilities are located. Planning ahead helps protect your family, neighbors, and property.

If you accidentally damage a utility line, stop work immediately and move everyone away from the area. Follow local emergency and utility reporting procedures.

9. Know the Warning Signs of a Gas Leak

Some plumbing professionals also work with gas lines, making gas safety an important part of household risk reduction.

Natural gas is commonly recognized by a rotten egg or sulfur-like odor. If you suspect a gas leak:
* Leave the building immediately.
* Do not use light switches, phones, matches, or electrical devices inside.
* Do not attempt to locate or repair the leak yourself.
* Call the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

Anchorage-area residents can review [ENSTAR’s gas-leak safety guidance](https://www.enstarnaturalgas.com/report-a-gas-leak/), including its 24-hour emergency number. If life or property is in immediate danger, call 911 from a safe location.

10. Do Not Ignore Small Plumbing Changes

Plumbing problems often provide warning signs before they become emergencies. Contact a professional if you notice:
* Unexplained increases in your water bill
* Low or changing water pressure
* Discolored water
* Water stains on walls or ceilings
* Damp or musty areas
* Toilets that run continuously
* Unusual sounds from pipes or the water heater
* Water collecting near fixtures or appliances

Addressing these signs early can help prevent more extensive damage and make repairs easier to manage.

⚠️ Keep Your Family Comfortable and Your Home Protected

Plumbing safety does not have to be complicated. Routine inspections, careful water use, and knowing when to call a professional can help reduce risks and keep your household running smoothly all summer.

If you notice a leak, damaged water line, water heater concern, gas line problem, or another plumbing issue, Discount Mechanical Heating & Plumbing is ready to help.
