Say it isn’t … snow? October 1st! What kind of winter will we have? 🚜 ❄️

It's official! Enough snow fell this morning at the National Weather Service office near the Anchorage airport to be measured, making it the first official snow of the season.
It also happens to set a record because, even though we've seen measurable snow as early as September in some years, it's never fallen on October 1st specifically since records began in 1953.
Fairbanks got snow this morning as well, just not enough to measure at the NWS office.

Brrrr. Have you winterized your summer toys yet? It’s time to put away the garden hoses and dig out your windshield scraper! 🥶

As our current system moves eastward overnight, clearing skies and light winds will allow for temperatures to drop into the 20s and for most population centers to see the first hard freeze of the season. Watch for patchy black ice for your Friday morning commute.

It's snow stake time! Our Operators and Shovelers are starting to install our driveway snowstakes this week. These help guide us to where your driveway ends after the snow has fallen. We ask that you keep them in the ground till your contracts end on April 15th, and we will come back to pick them up for reuse next season.
