You don’t have to wait for an emergency to start preparing for one.

September is National Preparedness Month, and this year’s FEMA Ready Campaign theme is “Americans Stand Ready.” It’s a reminder that preparedness starts with each of us knowing where to get information, having a plan, keeping an emergency kit ready, and knowing how to help the people around us. Small steps taken ahead of time can make a big difference when something happens without warning.

Being prepared also means being ready to support your community. Whether that means learning first aid or CPR, volunteering, or simply checking that your family and neighbors know the plan, everyone has a role to play in building resilience. This September, take one step toward being ready and encourage someone else to do the same.

Innovation isn't always what you can see above the water, it often happens below the surface.

That's exactly what the Arulaq was designed to do. Built and operated by Brice Civil Constructors, this first-of-its-kind agitation dredge is helping keep the Atchafalaya River Bar Channel open for deep-draft navigation while improving efficiency, reducing costs, and supporting regional commerce.

The results speak for themselves: the Arulaq moves more than 5 million cubic yards of material each month, operates around the clock, and helped reopen a channel that had been closed to deep-draft traffic for seven years. Following the success of the original project, Brice Civil Constructors was awarded a new $40 million contract to continue supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through 2028.

Working at heights is part of many construction and environmental projects, which is why planning ahead matters. The right equipment, proper inspections, and taking a few extra seconds to work safely can make all the difference.

Never assume a task is "too quick" for fall protection, even if you're using a ladder, working on scaffolding, or working on an elevated platform. One of the most crucial aspects of any job is taking care of yourself and your coworkers.
